A form of anxiety I’m guessing.

I’ve read the whole book & I’m not sure where we are calling half way so I won’t be spoilery but just to say I never even wondered why he wasn’t talking & I think its because I have a problem with my hearing where everything is too loud & so I use ear plugs & avoid noisy places as much as I can so a guy that hardly talks is like my dream man. While reading the book I never for a moment stopped to wonder why he didn’t talk. Clearly this says something about me.

I also never wondered while reading. I was just kind of like “huh that’s different” and marked it off as another thing I loved about Wallace. I did feel like there was something about him we didn’t know though.

I’ve finished as well, so I don’t want to be spoilery either. I did wonder though all of those things. For awhile I wondered if it was going to be an anxiety thing, a form of autism, some trauma. I had a nice mental list of possible reasons going.

I never questioned it.

Never questioned it. My guess though is that he didn’t want to talk about what happened. And just decided that talking wasn’t important.

Going “voluntarily mute” is definitely a coping mechanism but for what? Cole said something about going better at WestCliff than his old school and he’s mentioned his parents are gone so something about that. So I think it’s new
