The first one that comes to mind is Kim Stone. A lot of readers don’t like a ” damaged” detective , but I do, well a detective with a past. What Kim has overcome to reach her position makes her the character she is. Awesome!

For me V I Warshawski, a fiesty, sassy woman who takes no crap from anyone. When a Catholic priest one suggested she should try to be a good Catholic girl, she replied ‘not a Catholic and not a girl’ (the character was about 35 at the time).

I’m torn between Charlie Fox, Lisbeth Salander, and Cara from Alexandra Sokoloff’s Huntress series. Cool, cold, frozen, but each a total bad-ass

Ripley. Firstly, the character was going to be a man, so that’s a victory in itself. Plus she’s realistic (in the first two films) and never wanted to be the hero. She’s even a bit of a jobsworth in Alien, and makes no effort to be likeable. She’s just a normal person facing abnormal situations, and she kicks ass! Plus (in film 4) she slam dunks a basketball without even looking!! ??

V I Warshawski! She kicks major butt without breaking a sweat. Miss Marple (natch!) Vera, Ruth Galloway, Phryne Fisher – all for different reasons and also for the same one. They are their own women. There are others of course 🙂
