I’m rather keen on Jason Smith at the moment but I think that’s because I love Theakston! @Stewart There are lots of detectives I do really like. Not so much a fan of PIs.
Jackson Carmichael by @Stephen is my favourite PI I have far too many favourites for to choose just one, but some of them are DCI Ryan, DCI Damen Brook DCI Cyril Bennett. DI Ruby Preston DI Kim Stone to name a few
Sorry @Sarah, that was my shameful plug. DI Kate Matthews is the latest lead in my Bookouture published series. Book-1 is Dead ToMe and book-2 is Dying Day.
I’ve just been looking at my amazon account, Stephen Edger and discovered I have dying day on pre-order. I think I’d better download dead to me to read before Friday!
Beyond any question it is Jackson Lamb from the BRILLIANT BRILLIANT BRILLIANT Slough House series by Mick Herron. If you haven’t read Mick Herron, start now!
Columbo from the telly. No guns, no mad car chases, no ‘tecs with drink problems, no divorced wife, no alimony, no demanding girlfriend. In fact, no cliches of any kind.
@Domenica yes very smooth.. I’m glad he’s lovely, I’m not sure how well I’d cope if you said he wasn’t. I am a massive, massive fan. I think his books are amazing – as funny as Wodehouse in parts – and have been pushing them onto anyone who isn’t already fed up with my enthusiasms for many crime writers (including one Elly Griffiths whose work I admire very much too). x
Also Ted Hastings. Though he’s not a detective in the British sense of the word. But my goodness me, his interview technique is stonking, fella. Stickin’ out.
(aka Frances Brody) Difficult to come up with a favourite. Catriona McPherson’s Dandy Gilver (1930s Scotland) adds to the gaiety of the nation. Although I’ve watched ‘Death in Paradise,’ have only just enjoyed reading my first Robert Thorogood novel, Death Knocks Twice. Thumbs up for DI Richard Poole and Camille.
A lady PI would be Kate Shackleton by @Frances AKA Brody
Jules Maigret by Georges Simenon
For the men it must be two, Charlie Cameron by @Owen and Sam Dyke by @Keith
Yay, thanks @David. Good company to be in with, too!
Thanks David
Hercule Poirot
Jo cash and david booker
Detective – Lasser, PI – Charlie Cameron.
Cheers Maggie
DI Alan Banks
Really like Banks

John Luther!
I am gripped and only on season 2!
Lasser
D I Ryan, Max Tudor
I’m rather keen on Jason Smith at the moment but I think that’s because I love Theakston! @Stewart There are lots of detectives I do really like. Not so much a fan of PIs.
Fiona Griffiths
Just LOVE her!
Shes completely brilliant, my absolute favourite ?
Charlie Parker from John Connolly or Bernie Gunther from Philip Kerr
Cormoran Strike and DCI Banks
Lasser and Jefferson Winter.
Tom Thorne
Too many to choose!
Kim Stone ✔
Rebus deserves an honourable mention too.
Bosch.
Just started to watch the series but not read any Michael Connelly as yet.
Love the series, but for me the books are sublime.
Thanks, I did wonder that. I’ll check them out. Best to read in order?
@Jorja They can be read in any order, but I would go with the first, the Black Echo as it’s a powerful introduction.
Great thanks @Tony
Avoid the one set in the Far East imao ?
Jackson Carmichael by @Stephen is my favourite PI
I have far too many favourites for to choose just one, but some of them are DCI Ryan, DCI Damen Brook DCI Cyril Bennett. DI Ruby Preston DI Kim Stone to name a few
Have only read Stone, and love her.
@Tony I actually prefer Kim Stone series to the Helen Grace series
@Susan Haven’t read Grace either – I’ve led a very sheltered life…
Have you tried DI Kate Matthews yet? Her second book out on Friday.
Which author is DI Kate Matthews? I feel like I know the name but can’t place it
@Stephen I won Dying day in your competition and discovered I had Dead To Me on kindle so I need to start at book 1
@Sarah ,@Stephen
Ok. Maybe I haven’t read this series then. Thankyou. Will have a look
Sorry @Sarah, that was my shameful plug. DI Kate Matthews is the latest lead in my Bookouture published series. Book-1 is Dead ToMe and book-2 is Dying Day.
Shocking behaviour, Stephen Edger!!! Will have a look. You’ve written other series haven’t you??
Hey, in that case try DI Jimmy Bliss – I hear he’s good 🙂
Yes, @Sarah, but I daren’t plug anything else or I’ll get banished LOL
I think I’ve read some of your other books.
I’ve just been looking at my amazon account, Stephen Edger and discovered I have dying day on pre-order. I think I’d better download dead to me to read before Friday!
Woohoo! That’s music to my ears, @Sarah x
Beyond any question it is Jackson Lamb from the BRILLIANT BRILLIANT BRILLIANT Slough House series by Mick Herron. If you haven’t read Mick Herron, start now!
Is he either though?
@Tony He’s a spook so not strictly answering the question – you are correct and I stand corrected!
@Sheila I agree that he’s a brilliant character, though.
Sat next to Mick at a dinner last week and he said he could see Timothy Spall in the role…
Rebus
Columbo from the telly. No guns, no mad car chases, no ‘tecs with drink problems, no divorced wife, no alimony, no demanding girlfriend. In fact, no cliches of any kind.
Roy Grace
Too many to choose from but I do like Helen Grace
I’m reading the one where she’s in prison at the moment!
I would say Detective Peter Marino from the Patricia Cornwell series of books.
Myron Bolitar by Harlan Coben.
Banks by Peter Robinson, Grace by Peter James and Kinsey Mallone by Sue Grafton.
Do the Hardy Boys count? 😉

Aww thank you, Ted is very grateful for the mention 🙂
Thought we were only doing UK so.………
Harry Bosch
Alex Cross
Michael Bennett
and John Puller – a US Military Policeman
@Domenica – Timothy Spall would be great. Love the way you casually mention sitting next to my literary crush. Sigh….
I thought it was a rather neat piece of humblebrag myself ?. I love Mick’s books and he’s lovely too
My parents were out for a curry and realised they were sitting at the next table to Val McDermid….closest I can get to a brag!
I think Roger Allam would be a great Jackson Lamb. I said as much to my mate Mick…
You do tend to mention Ted Hastings now and again. Lol. I
I have a bit of a thing for him 😉
Tom Thorne, Tina Boyd, Ray Mason, Robert Hunter… Too many to choose from!
Great character Tina Boyd
Tom Bale
Sam Dyke (Keith Dixon’s books) and Dottie Borghase (Judith Lucci’s Mic Mcpherson books) – both great series.
Thanks, Eric!
DC Peter Grant (by Ben Aaronovitch) where else would you get police procedural mixed with supernatural crime?
I love that series
Me too. Think he’s got a new one out. Haven’t read it yet though.
@Peter it’s a novella I went to a signing of his it’s very good, I tried to persuade him to write a molly novella
What did he say to that?
@Peter she doesn’t say anything so it might be hard but he’d think about it as everyone loves her
Alan Banks and Roy Grace
Usually the PI/Detective of whichever book I am reading….Cormoran Strike has taken over from DCI Bennet this week.

I should have added Helen Grace to my list ?
I’m like many others here and couldn’t just pick one but I do have a sort of top three,
