The Shining is one of the scariest books I’ve ever read. I LOVED it, but was scared. Have not seen either movie. I usually find that movies rely too much on blood and guts but the visuals can never recreate what my mind can.

The Shining was one of the most frightening things I’ve ever read. The movie, while creepy, wasn’t NEARLY as terrifying….

I just finished it( I read it as a teenager too). Great book. Great story. One man’s spiral into oblivion.

Book is dangerous… (I’M weak at heart) ???… I have read it… It’s amazing for me in the sense how I used to ask my mom to get up at night and accompany me to the bathroom door when I wanted to pee… ????…

Oh, thank goodness I’m not the only one! I was reading “The Shining” as a teenager, working as the closing hostess at a restaurant, and it wasn’t uncommon for me to be up reading from 2 to 4 am. And while reading “The Shining”, going to pee in the middle of the night meant I got my 8-year-old brother up and took him to the bathroom. He never woke up, but I got to pee and I wasn’t alone.

I’m glad too… That someone as me exists…

The shining basically explores the existence of supernatural… It’s an extremely good concept… And no other author has seen it this way… That’s why King stays the King

There was also a 6 hour TV miniseries, years ago, that was more faithful to the book.

I thought the movie was terrible. Of course I am not much of a Nicholson fan.

2
Leslie

Me neither, but he didn’t fit the role anyway, nor did Shelley Duvall. In the book they were essentially a normal couple who had some issues – pretty big ones in Jack’s case. Nicholson and Duvall were weird from the start. I’ve also heard that Kubrick essentially terrorized her during the filming as a way to make her performance more “realistic” – if true. one more reason to stay away from it.

Donna

The movie was so awful, my husband and I laughed all the way through it.

I just recently reread The Shinning and was shocked to find that the wife is described as being a very attractive blond, sort of the opposite of Shelley Duval.

LaWanda

Thirty years ago she was considered pretty. I am not a fan of her voice and all I can see is Olive Oyl when I watch.

Donna

The book is very good and it’s very frightening. I’ve read it maybe 4 or 5 times, the most recent being more than 30 years ago. Gave me nightmares.

The shining is good. And the sequel Doctor Sleep is good as well. I was a little confused when I read the book cuz I had seen the movie so many times before and didn’t expect so many differences.

It’s really great – so many ch more to it than the film, which really ballsed it up in my opinion! I’ve seen it on quite a few ‘100 books to read before you die’ lists as well. The sequel, Doctor Sleep, is great too. Love Stephen King!

Currently reading the shining for the second time. I haven’t read it since I was 16 it’s amazing rediscovering everything all. Over again. I haven’t seen the movie but I recommend the shining to anyone who won’t get to many nightmares from it. 🙂
