The red pony in Steinbeck’s book entitled, funnily enough, The Red Pony. I was so disappointed as I was an avid reader of animal stories at the time I picked it up!
I have several answers to this question but won’t post them because they will be major spoilers and I know if I was reading this post I’d be mighty peed!!! ???
It might be worth a read but some deaths are used as plot devices and the element of surprise greatly adds to the feel and enjoyment of the whole book . Some people prefer to find out in their own time rather than begin a book knowing what is going to happen.
That is true, I love a fresh book which I know nothing about with possibility of element of the surprise. But I have also learned, not to get angry with spoilers. There are also a lot of books, that rely only on the Big Twist and sometimes you can see the worth of the book when you know it.
Fred Wesley not so much as there were two virtually identical characters so when it happened it almost seemed like the two were written for one to be killed off.
An old book. SPIRIT LAKE. Fell in love with so many characters, they got killed off half way into the book. I was actually angry and screaming NOOO at the author – MacKinlay Kantor
I couldn’t believe it and i was so mad at Snape until book 7. And then Snape became one of my favorite character ever ever in all of the books i’ve ever read.
Everyone’s like dobby or Fred. That’s not what got me. What got me throwing my book across the room and wailing with tears was Hedwig’s death. I’m mean come on Rowling. The bird?! Why Hedwig?
Where the Red Fern Grows, and then in Frisby and the RAts of NIMH there was a couple of rats who died but the book didn’t say who, I was worried it was Justin. But it wasn’t till years later when the author’s daughter wrote Racso that you find out Justin is ok. In another book One for Sorrow TWo for Joy it was a shock for the main hero to be killed in the middle of the book, then the story focuses on his offspring.
Like the Lupins… why did Rowling do that? Especially after they just had a kid? Was it some weird homage to James and Lily 2.0? (even though Harry and Ginny turned out to be actual James/Lily 2.0 minus anyone dying)
Old Yeller, from the book and movie of the same name. As a child, I couldn’t comprehend the someone would shoot their own dog! I still avoid books where the dog might die, and have avoided Disney movies, too!
Sirius Black in Harry Potter. I’m still mad at that. Sorry for people who are reading it. I am still sad about it because it totally screwed Harry over. He had finally found someone who gave a damn about him that was close to him and then snuffed away just as quickly. It hurt.
That too upset me. I was in disbelief. I’m like, “no…he’s going to come back. He’s going to come back…” He never came back…I’m still waiting for him. -_-
More like… talk about an author who wrote herself into a corner and didn’t know how to get out… since one of the girls HAD to die (she did the same thing in another book)
Ethan in The Iron Traitor. It was the end of the book and there were no more pages and at the time, there no more books either plus he it was in first person and he was the main character
The beginning of The Brother’s Lionheart is kind of brutal… because you have two deaths halfway through the FIRST CHAPTER (granted one of them isn’t supposed to be a real “death”). Did I mention it’s a children’s book?
Fred Weasly Harry potter book 7
Fred Weasley ? . I was like… ?

A good book is worth to read, even if you know everything that happens in it.

That was so so sad.

Where the Red Fern Grows, and then in Frisby and the RAts of NIMH there was a couple of rats who died but the book didn’t say who, I was worried it was Justin. But it wasn’t till years later when the author’s daughter wrote Racso that you find out Justin is ok. @Kayleigh same! I was like “NO! What kind of book is this!?”
HEDWIG ??
and just most of the people that died in the end. That was just stunning.
Like the Lupins… why did Rowling do that? Especially after they just had a kid? Was it some weird homage to James and Lily 2.0? (even though Harry and Ginny turned out to be actual James/Lily 2.0 minus anyone dying)
The husband in the time travellers wife. I mean, you knew it was coming sort of but I still wasn’t prepared
