Yard sale, used book sales at libraries, see if there is a local book swap in your neighborhood.

Thriftbooks is a great site if you aren’t in a hurry to get a book (shipping usually takes about a week). I also know that my local libraries usually do a “fill the bag” type sale once a year, but it’s not advertised very well so I have to keep my ears open.

Seconding Thriftbooks! Shipping is free if you spend at least $10 and you get a $5 off coupon for every $50 you spend. Most books on there are no more than $4.

Check with your local library! Ours has seasonal book sales and everything is from .25 to $2 and even a day where you fill up the bag for $5. I’ve gotten lots of new books there, I usually go with a list too.

No. Not locally.

I buy and sell books at my local book store. I have so much credit there because I keep more than I sell, but they take all books, including my kids’ books that they read and tire of quickly. Check your area–not only are you going to feed your habit, but you’re shopping local and giving back to the community! If you don’t mind shipping books, you can also join paperback swap online–free books, you just pay shipping to send them (not receive, just when you send one out), and media mail is still really reasonable. And Powell’s online!

Books-A-Million has started selling used books at discount prices, too, and I’ve picked up a couple for as little as $2-$5 apiece. Our store stocks them in the aisle according to genre, same as the new books, but they have brightly colored stickers on the spine so they’re easy to see.
