I give it at least 20 pages. If I’m still bored, I pick a new one.

I give it a couple chapters. Some of my favorite series start out slow but pick up to epicness

I give it at least half an hour, which more me averages around 50 pages. (I also give movies about half an hour too…). If I’m still bored I move on.

Life’s too short to spend time on a book you’re not into. I’d give it a chapter or two and then move on if it’s not gripping you.

1st chapter and then dump.

2 pages is not enough to judge a book

Set it aside and try something different. Maybe you’re just not in the mood for it right now.

I would continue the chapter then if its still boring, leave it and start another book.

I don’t give up that early. My attention span is longer than a Millennial’s. 😉

I say at least 50 pages in is a good length to get to before deciding if I am into it or not. Some of my all time favorite books were boring me to death in the beginning. Give it a chance before you dump it.

Sometimes a book can just start the wrong way. I think with Fifty shades of grey, i had reach probably the interview.

I move on to a new book. There are too many interesting books out there to get stuck on one. 🙂

Often a book will have a payoff that’s worth the wait though.

This is true, and it really just all depends on the book. Sometimes I do skip ahead and see if theres a glimmer of hope. And if there is I do carry on. 🙂

Judy

I agree with you, Jennie.

Then? You realise the author hasn’t done their best to engage you in their tale.

I use the rule of 3 in my daily life and books haha. Three chapters, if I still hate it, I move the hell on. 3 chapter rule has only hurt me once – Ready Player One

RPO is much better as an audiobook read by Wesley Crusher.

not an audio book fan. It took me about 9 chapters to get into it, then RPO was stellar

I had the same reaction to a book recently. Something about it just didn’t click with me. Doesn’t make it a bad book, just makes it a book not right for me. Put it down after about 5 pages. Picked up another book which I read in record time.

A few years ago I started Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk. Was not working for me till suddenly it kicked into high gear and became one of the best reads I’ve had lately. (If you saw the movie it was nowhere near the same.) I noted such a difference that I actually glanced up at the page number: 50. Later I was reading a review in the NYTimes by the legendary Michiko Kakutani and she said the story picked up noticeably at page 50.

I usually try to give it a few more pages even a chapter or two

I would try to read at least 20 or so pages and then find a new book if you are still not into it.

I will close a book after one page if not interested. there are too many books to read to let it bother me.
