I use a combination of both, but when I make one up, they’re usually inspired by a town or store I’ve visited.

Usually make up my own! But typically inspired obviously from real places I’ve seen or live in.

Combination, I’m slowly writing a story using a town a couple over from me, but I made up a high school and a bunch of businesses

I’m currently writing for the first time ever and I’ve actually been researching to find real towns at least. I’ve kept my places vague so far (like, A used car lot, the laundromat, etc.) but if I have to use a specific name I think I would like to try for somewhere real.
