Almost always. I think I’ve stopped reading a book after starting maybe 6 – 10 times. I just have to finish. But I really think it’s part of my Bipolar OCD

I give it a chance, and try to read as much as I can. But if it’s just not good in my opinion, I usually put it aside to read something else!

99% of the time I finish what I start. Many times with non-fiction books that I find slow-going, I put them to the side and read a few pages every couple of days until I finish (the whole process can take many months). I course, I’m reading a more exciting engrossing book at the same time.

Until recently, yes ? Now? Not so much ? Do I feel bad when I can’t finish a book? Yes! But reading isn’t meant to be a chore, so when it feels like one, I’m moving on to something else ?

I give a new book 50 pages. So many books, so little time. I usually place it gently aside and whisper “I’m sorry; this just isn’t working out. No hard feelings” and leave it at that. ?

Nope. Why force yourself to continue something you aren’t enjoying when you could skip it and move onto something better.
If you were listening to a CD and a song you didn’t like come on, would you skip it?
How is reading different.

Sometimes – I’m a bit obsessive compulsive about closure! For example, I hated Glass Sword & King’s Cage (although I did love Red Queen) but I read them both all the way through & I’ve also bought War Storm, just to finish the series! I don’t often DNF a book, but if I am going to DNF it, I know pretty quickly & I move on! I do try to stop myself continuing now, if I’m not enjoying it, just because there are sooooooo many more books I need to read!

2
Reply
Heather

For me it depends. If it is a book a friend recommended I try to push through. Sometimes I’ll look at reviews and see if people I trust say if it’s a slow start but gets better. I try to give a book all possible chances before DNFing. But if I’ve done everything I can and I’m still not feeling it then I just move on to something else.

NO. I can tell very early on if it’s going to get my interest and I can tell soon if the writing style is up my alley or if the plot immediately seems lame or implausible. I give 50 pages or 100 if it’s iffy. after that….heave ho or all in!

If it no longer keeps my interest up then I usually have to give up on it…give it a bad rating on http://goodreads.com/ and move on to the next book in my to be read list, plus I try not to lose any sleep about it,too! Especially in the 4 books of Emily Giffin’s that I couldn’t get into…..there’s nothing more to do than to give up on it and move on…

I used to be, then this year it hit me…..I’m getting too old and my time is precious. It’s ok to put a book away if I think it isn’t teaching me anything or providing stimulus. I always donate and figure somebody will like it somewhere. My cut off is 25% of book.
