?????
Never.
No. Waste of time.
Almost always. I think I’ve stopped reading a book after starting maybe 6 – 10 times. I just have to finish. But I really think it’s part of my Bipolar OCD
Nope. Too many other books, waiting to be read..
Almost always
Never
No if I cannot get into it I will just leave it. X
Most of the time. 🙁
Always as you never know it could get better. Must finish it
I give it a chance, and try to read as much as I can. But if it’s just not good in my opinion, I usually put it aside to read something else!
Most of the time and it becomes a steadfast urge for me to get to the last page fast if it’s insipid.
Yes
Unfortunately yes. In the hope it would get better. But a
I also try to finish it as quick as possible
99% of the time I finish what I start. Many times with non-fiction books that I find slow-going, I put them to the side and read a few pages every couple of days until I finish (the whole process can take many months). I course, I’m reading a more exciting engrossing book at the same time.
Me too! Just not a NF reader, although I think I should keep trying.?
@Fay Yes—-do—-so many different areas to explore. I always have one NF and one novel going.
Sometimes
Alas, I do. I’m glad that rarely happens, though…
I always have to finish them no matter how bad. I do it with anything though not just books, I hate leaving things unfinished.
Nope. I give it a try 20-25%. When it don’t caught me I move on to another.
I do, because some of the best books I’ve read had a better second half.
Yes
Yes
I do yes….just in case it is worth it in the end
Yes x

No
Yes, once I pulled through finally, I can say it was good or bad….
Yes. It just feels weird to not read till the end and not know what happens at the end of the book even though it isn’t interesting.
Yes
Until recently, yes ? Now? Not so much ? Do I feel bad when I can’t finish a book? Yes! But reading isn’t meant to be a chore, so when it feels like one, I’m moving on to something else ?
I try… but lately Iv been giving up on book that don’t really grab me. Il be lucky if I get thru my huge collection in this lifetime, I’m not wasting time on books that don’t suit me!

No
Not anymore. Too many books on my TBR
Yes
Yes, rule of 50 hen?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Yes.. I need to know how it ends?
I give a new book 50 pages. So many books, so little time. I usually place it gently aside and whisper “I’m sorry; this just isn’t working out. No hard feelings” and leave it at that. ?
I kinda do, if its horrible, I’ll skim through it lol, it rarely happens.
Yes….
If i bought it yes
Nope. Life’s too short and I have too many books.
yes, incase it gets better
Yes
Nope, but especially if it’s a slow story. If I can’t get into it after 4 or 5 chapters, I’m out! Sometimes I’ll pick it up again a few months later and try it again.
No. I lay it down and pick up another.
Nope. Why force yourself to continue something you aren’t enjoying when you could skip it and move onto something better.
If you were listening to a CD and a song you didn’t like come on, would you skip it?
How is reading different.
Read many books I struggled thru the first half and they turned out to be good/great reads. I always finish.
Nooo booo! Too much other books to read
Yes. I try to push through it. There are few times I’ve given up.
Yes…..but I try not too because I know my time is better spent on a book I enjoy.
I used to but I mainly read library books.
In the past yes always but now not at my age. I just let them go and move on. Too many books to read.
Yes, because I feel like what if it gets really good towards the end and I just gave up on it. Lol
Most of the time yea
No, not ever.I don’t do boring, although boring means something different to each of us, lol
Not anymore. Too many books in the queue.
No
Sometimes – I’m a bit obsessive compulsive about closure! For example, I hated Glass Sword & King’s Cage (although I did love Red Queen) but I read them both all the way through & I’ve also bought War Storm, just to finish the series! I don’t often DNF a book, but if I am going to DNF it, I know pretty quickly & I move on! I do try to stop myself continuing now, if I’m not enjoying it, just because there are sooooooo many more books I need to read!
For me it depends. If it is a book a friend recommended I try to push through. Sometimes I’ll look at reviews and see if people I trust say if it’s a slow start but gets better. I try to give a book all possible chances before DNFing. But if I’ve done everything I can and I’m still not feeling it then I just move on to something else.
No!
Not no more!!!
NO. I can tell very early on if it’s going to get my interest and I can tell soon if the writing style is up my alley or if the plot immediately seems lame or implausible. I give 50 pages or 100 if it’s iffy. after that….heave ho or all in!
Ditto for me!
No !
Yes
No!We all have different tastes and interests.
Not any more!!!
Not anymore
100 page rule
No, as I usually say, life is too short for a bad book. The world is full of many books and choices, why settle?
If it no longer keeps my interest up then I usually have to give up on it…give it a bad rating on http://goodreads.com/ and move on to the next book in my to be read list, plus I try not to lose any sleep about it,too! Especially in the 4 books of Emily Giffin’s that I couldn’t get into…..there’s nothing more to do than to give up on it and move on…
Yes
Yes – and also now that I am older – I will skim sometimes to the end , I may not have that much time to read all the books I want 🙂
I pass some pages..to see the end of it…lol
I used to force myself to finish, not so much any more.
some times
nope
Not at all
Not anymore. But that is only in the last few years. Before that I could count the books I DNF on one hand. Life is quite literally too short to read something you aren’t enjoying.
No.
I used to but now I’m grown up – I.e. over 65 and realise time is too precious to waste on literature that doesn’t grab me.
I have limited time to do things when finally get away from work so I just stop if it’s no good. It’s not something I like to do though as books are expensive here so it annoys ,to have wasted money.
Not really
I never feel compelled to finish it – plenty more good books out there to read.
Not anymore, life is short and too many good books exist to waste time on a bad one.
No
Hmmm, No!
Depends on how far i get into the book before i realize i don’t like it
Not really
Only if it’s for a book club!
Good point. I have to hang in for that reason…
Yes, I don’t want to be “that one” who doesn’t finish the book!
yes
Nope. I read 100 pages if I’m still not feeling it I don’t finish it.
yes
Yes
I used to be, then this year it hit me…..I’m getting too old and my time is precious. It’s ok to put a book away if I think it isn’t teaching me anything or providing stimulus. I always donate and figure somebody will like it somewhere. My cut off is 25% of book.
Yup!!
Nope. As my mom has said over the years, “it’s not like I have a give a book report on it.”
Not at all. If it doesn’t grab me within the first 20 pages then why push myself? A book that captures you should be hard to put down. Not hard to pick up.
Yes
Totally agree.

Sometimes
Life’s too short for uninteresting books.
Yes! ?
Most times but have given up on a few
Yes
I usually read several chapters to 100 pages, depending on the size of the book. But I have stopped reading if the book doesn’t catch my interest.
up to 100 pages
Unfortunately ?
It depends on the subject matter. Some badly written books have an interesting story line and some I just don’t care.
If it’s by an author I’ve enjoyed in the past I’ll do my best to finish. Usually if I don’t like a book at all back it goes.
Yes!!
Yes! Then I throw it in the to be donated pile after! ?
Used to – but life’s too short and there’s so many other books out there that will grab you ?
No.
Yes
Nope. I give it 100 pages. If I’m not interested by then, I won’t be. Too many books to be wasting time on reading books your not interested in.
No way
no
No
Nope
I usually do, yes, even if it’s just skimming or sort of speed reading to the end.
No I read 3 chapters and if nothing is happening, I move on
So do i! The only thing is that if it goes nowhere after the 1st chapter then I give up on it, give it a lower rating on http://goodreads.com/ and move on…
No. I had to do that enough as an English major in college.
Not anymore. Life is too short to waste time on bad fiction.
