Whenever I encounter a book I really want to read, I either download it onto my kindle or I buy/borrow it and put it on my nightstand. That way, I usually have 5-15 books next to me at any time. The moment I finish a book, I look through the pile on my nightstand/browse through my kindle and choose what interests me most at that moment.
Hmm, I have three floor to ceiling bookshelves all packed full of books I’ve bought on a whim and not read yet (I won’t even mention how many I have on my kindle! ?) so I work on the proven scientific method of…”oh look, pretty colours and shiny writing!” ?
Write every book I have and purchase ( about 200 or more) on a piece of paper, fold it, put in a big container of some sort. When it comes time for a new book… pick a piece of paper from container.
I mostly use the Goodreads random sort function for my TBR shelf, sprinkled in with new books I’ve heard a lot about and books I’ve received as gifts that I feel like I should read (or at least try) as an act of gratitude.
I look in my shelves and choose what suits. Often in bookshops though I just like to browse and pick what suits my mood. Often I haven’t even heard of them before. I like that bit knowing what I’ll come out with sometimes a book just calls.
I walk around the book store and when I see a interesting looking cover I stop and read the back and see if it interests me and if it does then in the basket it goes.
At home or at the store or on Amazon? On Amazon, I’m usually following recommendations from Book Riot and other favorite sources. At the store, I’m overwhelmed so displays help a lot. At home, I root around in my THE likes until I find the one to match my mood.
I browse (sometimes in genres I like, like Sci fi/fantasy) and look for a cover/title that sounds interesting. Then I read the back blurb. Bonus points if it has recommendations from other authors I am a fan of. Phrases like “enchanting” or “beautifully written” are ones that I like a lot, and would probably lead me to choose the book.
I use Goodreads. Also read the NY Times Book review with my phone and Goodreads and record things I might be interested in. My daughter is a middle school librarian so she passes me the YA books.
I tend to go with my mood, find the right subject that fits it. I used to choose solely on covers and found some nice hidden jems. I also have chosen from personal recommendations. I worked in a bookstore for 12 years and after a gew customers kept recommending the same series I knew I had to read it. This became one of my favorite. The Malazan Book of the Fallen by Stephen Erikson.
I stare at my bookshelves for 20 minutes. Then I watch some Netflix. Then I stare at my bookshelves again. Then I suggest going to the bookstore. When my husband rejects my shopping request, I continue staring at my shelves, and then I grab one. I usually read a page or two, decide it’s not what I want, and then grab a different one and THAT is the one I’ll read.
You should make a jar with the names of all of the books you want to read on popsicle sticks. And then when u wanna read a new book u draw from it???♀️ I usually just have an ongoing list and pick which I feel like I’m in the vibe for that month
If I’m not getting an email from Amazon (curse them :p) and buying to read immediately, I go to GoodReads (where I keep my TBR list). Then I sort my TBR list by review grade (with several votes) if I want to have a good chance of a good read, sort to find a book with little or no votes if I feel adventurous, or scroll through covers like Netflix to see what I’m in the mood for. Of course, none of that would be possible without filling my TBR list at the library, top free 100 list on Amazon, friend recommendations, and helping out fellow authors.
Goodreads. Recommendations from fellow readers
I normally just read the blurb. If it catches my attention I’ll read it x
My mood ?
Whatever appeals to me
The look of the covers, favourite authors, new releases, reviews …. ohhh goodness the list goes on ????

My nightstand right now… ?

It may sound weird but I run my hand over all the spines and see which one feels right.

@Jacki That’s what I do as well.
@Jacki I do that too! ?
I am going to do this!
@Laurieann I do the same with my wish list

I go by what the back cover tells me about the story.
I am very lucky in the sense I have a best friend that loves to read and knows my taste. He has made me a list of books to read ?

I make lists of several before I go to the library. However our library is so small they never.have my authors
I’m very much a mood reader! I have to pick what genre I’m in the mood for and go from there.

Mar has explained my method perfectly!
Section, Cover Art, Flyleaf…
Well i have like 2 or 3 that i really want to read and then i post polls for siggestions and help!

I just pick one from my shelf usually or see which audiobook is available at the time. I’ll sometimes let Goodreads choose my next book.
Goodreads and recommendations. If I really like a book, I try and find something similar to it.

By making lists
Mood at the time I’m choosing and/or what I might have borrowed from the library.
Love it!! So beautifully random!!
I use an app that randomly picks my next read from my TBR list.
What is this app you speak of!
@Amy It’s called “Pickster.”
@Nicki thanks!
@Melanie It is. There’s about 300 or 400 titles of different genres of books in there. ?
Usually it spends on my mood. But if there’s a new book by one of my fave authors that has come out, that one moves to the reading now list!
I’ve been going alphabetically by title and just picking one of my books that sounds interesting
Go to my bookshelf and close my eyes and point anywhere wherever I land in I read
I just choose them in a serendipitous manner. Whatever appeals at the time on my kindle or digital library
