@Annabelle do you think I can get CRESS from my library or online library? I’ve been waiting WEEKS I think someone has stolen the book and it’s never to be returned. I’m just avoiding paying $20 for my own copy

Depends on the book. There’s a rise in especially good YA right now, including The Hate U Give, and Daughter of Smoke and Bone which is blowing the top of my head off in how well structure it is, in addition to some incredibly beautiful prose.

Seriously the prose and imagination in those novels plus another, Strange The Dreamer, god it’s lovely

I genuinely like the characters, too. That’s rare for me when romance is in a YA book. I’m usually like, “Leave her alone. Get a job.” But Taylor puts such loving effort into breathing life into her characters, I can’t resist. Looking forward to Strange the Dreamer, too. My friend Mary is constantly wheedling me to read that one as well.

I’m so lucky my favs are putting out so many books right now. Between Laini Taylor and VE Schwab getting a new book deal, I’m well spoiled.

1
AnnabelleQuestion author

Laini Taylor is like, a goddess of writing

0
Geneva

@Annabelle True. I think some authors mistake intensity or forbidden romance for pushy stalkers.

1
AnnabelleQuestion author

Looking at you Edward Cullen, you creepy old man

1

Laini Taylor is AMAZING. I had my sister and my daughter read The Daughter of Smoke and Bone, and neither one finished it!! I was so disappointed.

YA books are good for anyone who’s going through a transitional phase in life, I honestly love them. They’re more of a crash course on how to deal with reality, rather than an escape from reality. They’re relatable, and thought-provoking. What YA books have you read, of late? 😀

SOOO MANY. The Harry Potter series, I’m planning on reading Dorothy Must Die, Carve the mark and just ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Hehe, I feel ya. Have ya checked out the ‘mortal instruments’ series?

1
AnnabelleQuestion author

Tried it, got to the incesty feelings and skipped out

2
Anushree

Nah, there’s a huge plot twist in the end. Spoiler alert- it was a false alarm.

0
AnnabelleQuestion author

Even so, if she thought he was her brother that should have stopped any romantic inclinations. For me it’s like, if this person is in any way related to me they’re a no go

0
Anushree

True, I feel the same. But I just couldn’t put the book down, the plot felt alive so I pushed their icky forbidden romance to the background.

Young adult is a marketing thing, it doesn’t mean the book is not as good as ‘adult’ books, which isn’t really a thing. I read a couple of Robert Swindles books recently who was someone I read as a child and I was honestly shocked how ‘adult’ the themes were. They don’t patronise readers so really I am not sure they should be classed as young adult…

I’m 24 and I’ve been reading YA since I was a teenager and I’m a diehard YA fan. I love the genre to absolute pieces and it’s one of my most favorite genres and I don’t think I’ll ever quit reading YA. Something about the genre really seems to attract some of the most talented authors and produces some of the best writing out there.

I don’t see many new books that are adult books unless they’re ADULT books. Most young adult books I’ve read were good no matter my age. A good book is a good book

Of course, I don’t really classify books as YA or Adult or Children’s Lit for my own sake. I just find what looks good, and read.

I think it’s dumb that they’re called YA since the main characters are usually teenagers. Imo, it should be called teen literature. I’m a young adult and want to read about other young adults (18-25), not kids dealing with high school drama.

I read YA when they were too old for me. I read them when they were appropriate for me. I read them to my kids. I read them occasionally now.

I read good books. I don’t care what the labels are.

I read Winnie the Pooh aloud to every girlfriend I ever had. Reading aloud is one of my skills. It won me my wife. None of them cared it was a children’s book. Later I read it to my kids.

I love a lot of ya books!!!! Oftentimes, it has nothing to do with how easy or difficult a read a book is. More times than not, it’s more of the subject matter, characters and feelings, etc. As an educator of teens and young adults, I love reading, recommending, and discussing some of these books to my students.

I read few YA books because most of them seem, to me, full of flat characters or with a plane story/plot BUT, obviously, there are exceptions so I don’t completely discard the genre and I read a few that catch my attention and yeah, i have found pretty good YA so I think there are always treasure to be found anywhere 🙂
