Neither. After Twilight, I can’t see a vampire without it sparkling in the sun. After the Cruel Prince, faeries have been permanently destroyed for me. I want a good faerie book. One that has faeries depicted the way they were in myth, but without the poorly written sludge that is Holly Black. I am resentful. I had to pay full price for that book.
@Tiffany I met Holly Black a few years back and I told her that 104 pages into her book White Cat, I had figured everything out. Although it wasn’t my intention, she was quite offended. She quickly signed my book and then rudely dismissed me. I wasn’t criticizing, I was just expressing surprise that her plot in this particular book was so transparent. Guess she doesn’t appreciate healthy criticism.
I hope I don’t have to pick just one. I loved Vampires from the age of 8 when my mom dropped me off at the movie theater with my sister and we saw the Bela Lugosi Dracula movie. My sister was 6. I wonder if my mom knew how scary the movie was. Thrilling movie for little kids to see.
Depends on the vampires and faeries. If it is a Twilight kind of thing, I will pass. Black Dagger Brotherhood vamps, I am in! Kind of the same for Fae. Lame ones, nah….
Vampires, of course, unless the fairies are like the one in Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell–neither cute nor benign, but dangerous, mess-with-at-your-peril creatures.
Actually just thinking more seriously about it, Fairies are not particular cute nice or pleasent, in mythology and folklore they are nasty pieces of work.
It depends. Vampires generally rank higher than fairies, at least I would know what to expect with a vamp. You never know with fairies, those tiny bastards give me nightmares.
