Its a classic. I highly recommend it to anyone serious about creative writing. Its not linear and for beginning readers it can seem disorganized and confusing. It might take a second reading to fully appreciate its depth of meaning. At least that is what happened in my case. I read it because Hollywood adapted it for big screen with a high priced cast, made the cover of Time magazine. It might be important to remember the book was written with the Korean War in mind, just like novel Mash, which also became a classic movie, however was published during the worst years of Vietnam Police action/conflict/war. At its core is a satire for what people were beginning to understand about war, that it is a vehicle of big business. Don’t bother with the movie, its cinematically very good looking picture with good acting, but the screen play does a butchers job of translating the satire into visual story. Again I would highly recommend it to any creative writer wanting to write satire and possibly a guarded recommendation to watch the movie.
read it when i was very young; my brother brought it home from school. It traumatized me to know that stuff like that happened and I had no idea about it. I think I was about 8 or 9.
I read it a while ago as a teen and remember liking it. It’s a bit rambly in places, but it’s funny
I liked the first half of it, but I got bored with the rest.
One of those rare cases where the movie is better.
Read it years ago … I enjoyed the book
A remake is in the works for tv.
Absolutely loved it! But I’m a big satire fan, so it was right up my alley. It’s reminiscent of Kurt Vonnegut. I haven’t seen the movie though?
Hell yes! Starts off hilarious and starts to get progressively bleaker from the mid-way point but never loses its irreverent and ridiculous edge.
It’s written non-chronologically, especially in the beginning, so you have to make the connections in the narrative flow yourself.
Honestly I didnt like it at all but I read it years ago…
haven’t finished it (yet). however I found it to be unexepectedly entertaining. the main guy was a riot. ?
