It’s tied between The Maze Runner and Percy Jackson. I think Percy Jackson was a little worse, but I was more disappointed by the Maze Runner because it’s my favorite book/series.

2

Sara

Maze runner movie was horrible!! I was visibly angry.

1
Caroline

@Sara me too! And what’s even worse is that now everyone wants to watch the movies and won’t give the books a chance because the movies are “better”. Makes me so angry, like give the books a chance! Half the reason I was excited for the series to be adapted was so more people would read the books.

What do you think could have made it better?

0
Umeed

@Angelee better acting, and direction, the actors didn’t have the same passion that we felt from the characters in the book, and better camera work definitely

1
AngeleeQuestion author

@Umeed The first film, to me, was terrible. Like it was trying too hard, but it got a little better as the movies went. I still like the final movie. That fight scene!

0

@Angelee the big battle? yes that was my fav too the only one i enjoyes in all movies might have enjoed it more than the book’s version

Mortal instruments was awful. I don’t care for Jamie Campbell Bowers but I loved seeing Kevin Zeigers since I remember him from Airbud (I was five and he was a dreamy guy with a dog. What more could a girl want) but the adaptation was atrocious!!!

1

@Angelee the TV show was extremely unfaithful to the book.

0

@Angelee Yes and no. they took what they thought was the best parts from three books and condensed it. Ans left out pivotal characters altogether. Truly a great series to read. The acting in the movie was good but the director butchered it.

0
Jelaina

Oh Mortal instruments was by far the worst.

1

@Jelaina Wait!! Currently Mortal Engines takes the cake. just ??‍♀️??

@Yomna TMI movie was awful, the series isn’t too bad though

0
Danesha

@Yomna The book series is awesome as for the movie, They could’ve used the same actors for The series and I think it would’ve been better

0
Yomna

@Heather Actually I think the opposite, movie-Clary was better than series-Clary for example, but the only reasons I’d say the series is better are:
1- Harry Shum Jr.
2- Matthew Daddario
3- Dominic Sherwood, who did an excellent Jace tbh
but the making of the series didn’t even fit the book’s level.
Maybe it got better though, I only watched the first 3 eps.

0
Danesha

@Yomna I’m actually gonna finish it and maybe it will change my opinion on the show. Seeing Dominic Sherwood as Christian Ozera kinda scarred me.

0
Yomna

Danesha BornforGreatness Givens Maybe -for using movie cast-. I’m still holding on to the three I mentioned above though xD As for the book, I only read the first one and couldn’t keep going to the second for some reason that I can’t place yet honestly, even though I was curious to what’s coming next because a friend of mine is obsessed with it and I can barely hold her back from spoiling it ? I might give it another go and start the second book soon.
As for Dominic, yes. OMG! They ruined his talent by the way they produced Vampire Academy. I think they kinda cursed the whole cast because I love Zoey Deutch but I don’t know how the heck they managed to see her as Rose :’)

0
Danesha

@Yomna Same I always pictured Meghan Fox as Rose. The actual appearance of the cast is what irked me. Mia did NOT Have short hair ??

1
Yomna

And Danila Kozlovsky is HOT and everything, but the long hair made him look older and he was already 28 -as much as I remember- and HOW COULD HE BE DEMITRI SHOW ME ONE SPECK OF CHEMISTRY BETWEEN HIM AND ZOEY!!!
That movie got me to the edge, just when I thought things couldn’t get worse than Alden Ehrenreich’s Ethan in Beautiful Creatures :’)

@Katie holy crap I forgot about the golden compass. That was awful too. The books were so good!!!

0
Elena

Ready Player One. Holy crap, they ruined it. The book is so well written – so much nostalgia and they missed every great thing about the book. Don’t get it twisted – the movie itself was good (if you never read the book) but this is about book-to-movie adaptation.

5
Reply
Jelaina

@Elena I respectfully disagree. Having enjoyed both, I feel as though it would have been a very dull movie had they stuck to the original quests. I think changing them allowed them to showcase a lot of nostalgic 80’s pop culture (introducing the Delorean much earlier for example) and while it deviated from the original book, I feel it did the overarching theme justice!

0
Mona

I feel like if you watch the movie first (which is what I did) you enjoy it pretty much.

This is mine, as well. Ella Enchanted has been one of my favorites for years. I remember even thinking it would be cool if they made a movie out of it, lol. Then they finally announced the movie and I was pretty excited until I saw the trailer (and eventually the movie). 🙁 Just so, so bad.

1
Ellie

I mean, that ending is so profound an amazing and an emotional roller coaster and in the movie she just orders herself in the mirror to break the curse. Lame.

And then everything is so silly in the movie when it’s not in the books. Ugh…

0
Jelaina

Seeing as I love the movie for its silly charm and never having read the book, now my interest is piqued!

@Angelee And I can’t even say how Anne Hathaway was in it because I couldn’t make it past the first 10-15 minutes. But the acting wasn’t the problem.

1
Ellie

@Jelaina the book is 100% different. It’s not very long either. It’s a great rainy afternoon book.

1
Ashley

Anne Hathaway is a good actress. They just wrote the movie to be so goofy. The book is not goofy at all. If you havent read this.. definitely read it!

3

As a huge Twilight fan I think the reason the movies were in my opinion pretty damn good was that Stephanie Meyer retained significant creative control. And I think that may be where some of the other authors didn’t realize what they had compromised in the deals for the movie rights. **Very Important Side Note – No they were not spot on and/or perfect by any means but I appreciated how much they tried to keep the story intact**

3
Reply
AngeleeQuestion author

I actually liked the Twilight movies, except the first one. It seemed cheaply made and that it was trying too hard. Afterwards, things go better. The finale was my fave.

@Cacy I loved the Ella Enchanted movie so much I read the book. I enjoyed the book too.

0
Cacy

@Shelley I’m glad you were able to enjoy both. I think it’s generally easier to go from movie to book than the other way around. (Especially when it’s a book you’ve read a million times) At least that’s the way it is for me.

1
Shelley

@Cacy I know in most cases the books is better there is one exception the movie Nerve was much better than the book. The book was just awful.

1
Cacy

@Shelley I haven’t heard of that one. But as much as I loved Hunger Games, I didn’t like the second book at all. But I thought they did a much better job with the movie.

0
Shelley

@Cacy really? I thought the book was much better. I always thought they got the casting wrong for The Hunger Games except for Gail.

1
Cacy

@Shelley The second book just didn’t click with me. While I understood that she was dealing with trauma, Katniss felt very passive compared to the first book and then at the end we learn that everyone around her was plotting the revolution but decided to leave her out of it.

Somehow I thought that worked better in the movie. I always thought it was because we weren’t “in her head” the way we are in the book so she didn’t feel so passive. But it’s been a while since I read/watched either.

I liked the cast though. lol. As they say, different folks, different strokes! ?

Same w/ TMI! I remember being so excited for the film and then I see it and was just disappointed times 10!

1
Ruby

I only made it to the end because I love Lena Headey. Johnathan Reece Meyers was totally wrong for Valentine, and the whole storyline with Hodge just didn’t work. I was so angry!

0
Patti

Same! That wasn’t how I pictured Valentine AT ALL! I was just done with the movie. I couldn’t even watch the tv show…

1
Ruby

Right?? He was meant to be blonde at a bare minimum!
I did like the actresses who played Izzy and Clary, but that was about it. Jamie Campbell Bower is great, but he wasn’t snarky enough as Jace for me.
I tried to watch the show… I did a couple of episodes, but I couldn’t get into it – too many changes. I MIGHT give it another go for Malec, but I’m not sure it’s worth it.

0
Patti

Yes! I pictured him so blond like almost platinum colored. And Jamie was good but you’re right, not snarky enough. I watched two episodes of the show and was fed up. Too many changes that it just … isn’t right.

1
Ruby

It’s kind of like watching a bad fan fiction re-write of the series. There are a couple of good bits and the rest are awful.

0
Patti

Ugh AGREE 100%! And I read those books at least 4x! I know the details that were missed or skipped or completely redone! Halfway through the movie, I stopped paying attention and I never finished the series.

Completely agree! I hated the movie, I love the book series and the manga they made, but I loathe the movie with a burning passion.

Kourtney right? I got the 4th book as a kid free after finishing a reading contest at the library and I loved it so my mom got me the other books ( that were out at the time) I grew up on that it was my start to fiction/reading/fantasy and the movie was some gross joke!!! How could they!

I swear they botched Divergent. The first one was decent and then it got all screwed up. I was livid.

Vampire Academy and Divergent trilogy (even if I haven’t finished books I think any series shouldn’t be sooo smashed and destroyed like this) Percy Jackson (books are so amazing) and the movie version of Mortal Instruments.

Blood and chocolate! It changes so much from the book ??. They just took the names from the book.

Blood and Chocolate! I love the book but what on earth was that film?! The only thing similar were the names, why did they bother?! ?
