I first read The Shining when it was a fairly new book, and I was living alone in an attic in Ann Arbor. This was unwise. I don’t know that it’s the scariest book he ever wrote, but it certainly scared me more than any of the others.

Pet Cemetery – I don’t know if I will ever be able to read it again. Definitely a book to read during the bright morning hours – reading something else before bed.

So many are scary in the “traditional” way, but many of SK’s books are about the “monster within”, which I think is often more scary than “external” monsters. I love “Gerald’s Game” as that includes both types 🙂 Also really like Rose Madder for scariness – I have been there with abusive partner and it is so true to life!

I read that it is one of Steve’s unfavourites of his novels, but I LOVE it. I re-read it every couple of years. The ending is insane, and makes me feel insane for a day or two after finishing it as well – the power of Stephen KIng!
