To kill a mockingbird..a tree grows in Brooklyn..and one flew over the cuckoo’s nest..I was about 13..my mom got them from a book club..she said I couldn’t read them..too adult..sooo..she worked night’s.. slept days..and I sneak read them…yup..bad teenager ??
“Jaws” may have been mine as well! It certainly was one of the first “adult” novels I ever read, back when it was the big thing, months before the movie came out. I was around 10 years old.
I don’t remember my first, geez that was a long time ago, could have been anything, Flowers in the attic, Jaws, Exorcist, The Amityville Horror, Jaws, Stephen King books, I read all of those! 😀
@Laura I saw my dad reading Clan of the Cave Bear and I wanted to read it too. Because kids books were too easy for me. I wanted to read a “grown up” book. He told me I was too young to read it. In my innocence, I thought he meant that the vocabulary was too advanced for me. So I was determined to read it anyway, and read it with a dictionary next to me, looking up all the new words I didn’t know. There weren’t many. I loved the series, and read them all. I didn’t realize until after I read the second one, that he meant I was too young because of the subject matter and adult content. By then it was too late. I almost became an anthropologist and actually wrote a letter to the author for a class assignment. She wrote me back.
I can only remember back to high school reading list. The Butterfly Revolution, Flowers for Algernon, The scarlet letter, To kill a mockingbird. Non school assigned were Sybil, Go ask Alice, Borrowers but I would say that is YA my first chapter books were the Nancy Drew series Mom let me join the monthly book club and there were 2 books in one, the back of the book was printed upside down. Loved getting those packages. I fell behind one summer and mom cancelled. I was so sad come wintertime with nothing to read and started watching way too much TV and stopped reading until highs school assigned books.
Read Jaws at 14, when published. Loved it. Mine was The Exorcist, when I was 12. (I bought it along with a few other more mature books with my gift certificate that I was awarded by my English teacher for reading the most books in a month). Big mistake. I loved it but it scared the crap out of me. I had a hard time sleeping at night. The 2 books I caught the most grief from my parents over were Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex* (*But Were Afraid to Ask) and Helter Skelter. I was 15 when I read them. My mom kept hiding the 1st 1 from me and I kept finding it. (I borrowed it from our neighbor’s library while babysitting and since she and her husband were very hippie-ish, she saw nothing wrong with my interest in the book). Because of this, it took forever for me to finish and return it to my neighbor. My dad was the 1 with the issue with Helter Skelter. He saw me reading it when I was 15 and asked me if I didn’t have anything better to read than that “trash”. Fortunately, I had a TV in my room when it came on TV because my dad would never have agreed to watch it. My parents never “chaperoned” my bookstore visits so I took advantage of that fact. I was always reading way above my age and grade level. And when I discovered Stephen King at 14, when Carrie was 1st published, there was no turning back.
