If you like VF, I’d recommend Middlemarch or Bleak House. If you don’t want something that long, Trollope’s The Warden (but it’s the first of a series and it typically tempts folks to read the whole series).
@Don I would choose Bleak House. It is not do ponderous as Eliot or Trollope
Anything by Trollope would be my choice.
I read the count of monte cristo recently and loved it , so maybe this if you haven’t read it yet.
You could read Gone with the Wind and note the influences
