When you read that author’s works because you want to and not purely because it’s fashionable.
When the author’s works stand the test of time and goes beyond trends and is still beloved by many.
When you’ve read that author’s book and just can’t wait till the next one..
When I want to read their books several times.
When a writer writes with feeling, passion, empathy and understanding.
When you read their work because you must, not because you should?
For me a great author is one that writes a book where I read a sentences that resonate with me and make me gaze into space for a bit before carrying on reading! ?
The author that provokes a full range of emotions, laughter, tears, suspense,,if they can do that, they have me all the way.
Literary craftsmanship. Reader shouldnt be able to quit reading. Overall interesting.

The books have to stand the tests of time. No bad books in his body of works. In my opinion, authors such as John Harvey, Reginald Hill, James Lee Burke are examples of authors who have never written bad books.
