Love this response. I get so caught up and sad when my books end and I HATE that so many people say “it’s just a book, read something else”. I’m over here like IM MOURNING A LOSS LEAVE ME THE EFF ALONE

Monique Erika have them read A Little Life and ask them how they feel when they are done with it. They’ll never say “just a book” ever again.

Betty

@Monique, sure is. She is a rescue, I got her when she was 4, now 14. Unfortunately, she is starting to have some pretty serious physical issues and I’m not sure how much longer I’ll have her, best bet, a year. Are you familiar with the breed? I have had a Shorthair, one at a time, since 1973. This is Chloe and she is my fourth one. LOVE the breed!

@Betty I’m so sorry she is having some problems. We LOVE the breed. Currently have 3 and a litter of 9 !!! They are such an amazing breed!!

@Monique , OMG! You are so lucky. I am single and now retired. I just can’t afford to have more than one at a time in order to give a dog all they deserve. Also, I am now 72 and my only hope of having another GSP would be to adopt a senior, tho’ I’m also thinking about just fostering after Chloe is gone. I just cannot imagine not having a dog and, especially, a GSP.

Say something like, “yes, it’s just a book, a magic portal to other times and places, a gateway to other’s thoughts, a wonderful tool to expand my mind and life. I’m so sorry you’ve missed out”!

Okay story time:

5th grade this happened to me at the lunch table. Stupid boy said the same thing to me while I was reading. My response? I threw his sandwich away and said “it’s just food. You don’t need it to live or anything.”

I got detention but I got a high five from my mom so it was worth it ?

I think that soccer etc is just a game so I get that others don’t see reading the way I do. I would point out to the person that we all have different interests and priorities and to me there is no JUST a book – its my entertainment, friend, sanity …

It’s the same as “it’s just a dog”. These people hate themselves. And I hate them too. ? ? ? Just a book? No one has ever said that to me. If they did…they just better not, ok?

The other statement that makes me cringe is , “Oh, I never read “, as if this is a great achievement. Once was told that I was wasting my whole life away, reading so much. There are just no words …
