Me too!!! I’m a redhead, so my family bought me all of those books when I was only 7 or 8. I couldn’t get through them fast enough and then read them over and over throughout my childhood.

Violeta

Oh I loved it too! Read all of them as a child.

Ah so dislike Dickens the misery of it all. Love classics and have read most books ( comes of having a father who is a prof in English lit ) but just can’t get on with Dickens

Is this the one where there’s a young lad that appears as a servant & they call him something like the scarlet avenger?

0
Claire

This is really bothering me now, I can’t for the life in me remember exactly who this character is & which book he appears in, but he was a humourous character so if anyone knows, please put me out of my misery!

0
Ros

@Claire I think it could be Great expectations as I think Pip had a servant boy called avenger but not entirely sure as I read it possibly 30 years ago ?

1
Claire

Thanks @Ros, you may well be right, I’ve read it a few times but not for years now & my memory is appalling, find to have to re-read it to find out!

1
Ros

@Claire I know lol my memory is too ?
The amount of books I go to buy then have a glimmer of a memory of already reading it ?

I think I have a chip on my shoulder about that one because it was required reading for me in the 7th grade. 🙂

I discovered George Orwell on my own and I just loved that book. 1984 was great too.

1984 is one of my all time favorites.

1
Christina

I remember they made us read Lord of the Flies in school and I actually loved it. Probably the only book they required us to read that I liked.

That and The Outsiders. If I went back and reread most of them, I know I would love them now. I was a major bookworm but I hated having to interrupt whatever book I was reading personally for required school reading. I still committed to them, but begrudgingly. Haha. But some, I’m pretty sure I’d still hate, like The Scarlet Letter.

2
Christina

Oh I forgot about the Outsiders. That was a great book too.

My best friend got this for me at a goodwill for $3. Gold leaf pages and gorgeous. We googled it and found out it’s worth over $200! She only got it for me because it was ‘pretty’ and knows I love Jane Austen. Amazing find!
