Alexandra

I don’t do audio books. They’re just not my thing.

VickyQuestion author

I listen to audio books only when traveling or I download to mp3 player and listen to them on my walks ….I can’t read and ride in a car cause I get motionsick…. half the time if they make a movie from a book it doesn’t do the book justice….. example” flowers in the attic” movie did NOT to book justice at all….book was 100 times better…

At 10, reading Salems Lot by Stephne King. I slept with the light on for about 6 months after. Still terrified of windows at night.

What’s it about about I’m curious

0
Elli

@Meghan Vampires that scratch, ever so subtly at your window pane. It was before vamps got real popular and just the idea of being spied on through a window terrified. me. Also any book with aliens looking at you through the window freaks me out: Whiltely Steibers “Communion” did me in, lol

2
Elli

This is from the movie, but it might as well have been grabbed right from my 10 year old imagination at the time. ?

It’s a children’s book, but omg it was scary. It was the idea/concept itself that was scary. Hide & Shriek by R.L. Stine.

The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum. Based off true events.

I saw the movie ‘American Crime’. This deals with the real incident of the teen abuse, and I heard what you have read is also inspired by the case. I have no intention of reading it. Really heartbreaking.

0
Lysa

There’s a movie based off this book as well. I’ve seen both, and I agree, it’s truly awful what happened to those girls. I probably won’t ever watch them again, nor read the book again, but I recommend it because I see it as true horror.

0
Claire

Yeah. It is not what demons(as in supernatural terms) that scare me the most. It is the human ignorance, willfullness, and evil.

Danielle

Anson Amityville
King. Shining
Simmons. Song of Kali

Superstition by David Ambrose is one that comes to mind. I think it freaked me out because , while the book is fiction, the idea came from an actual experiment.

I don’t usually get scared but maybe creeped out.

Salem’s Lot

Heart Shaped Box

All good books. John Saul’s work always makes me skin crawl, they’re more psychological and “real”, but so good. Faces of Fear and Second Child, I recommend.

Most of crime stories written by Japanese authors. Miyabe Miyuki writes much thrillers dealing with social problems. I recommend ‘All She was Worth’. It is translated in English.

I want to read her thrillers: US Amazon only do her fantasy novels on Kindle for some reason. (Stopped buying actual books: not enough space? )

Claire

That’s odd… :/ I haven’t read much of her fantasy books, though.

The story was indeed creepy. I was surprised with the outcome of the movie; it was beautifully illustrated with visual effects, which made me wonder whether the director/playwriter read the same book with mine.

2
Carol

@Claire other scary reads of course, but this haunted me maybe especially as a mom…. I avoided the movie & did not pass on book to my usual reading friends- gave it away!

1
Claire

I understand. I watched the movie trailer which looked distinctively different from what I have read in image. I expected it to be dark and bleak. So, I watched it out of curiosity; otherwise, I wouldn’t have. I have no idea why it has become a hit temporarily, though.

1
Maureen

Yes, I agree, that was a very frightening book, but so well done. One of my favorite books.

0
Maureen

Loved the movie

Salems Lot scared me but I was only about 15. The Exorcist scared me. A book called Poppet scared me. Helter Skelter scared me to.

0

@Carol Exactly!

1
Carol

@Janie WAY too real…

0
Janie

@Carol I read it several years ago and it frightened me even THEN…..did you see the mini series? Did you think it represented the book?

0
Carol

@Janie I haven’t seen it but do want to (don’t have a hulu subscription); heard it’s very good & a good representation of the book-can’t imagine what they are putting in Season 2.

0
Janie

I have but haven’t watched….When ever I am asked for a book that was scary or life altering, I always choose this one because it SO took me aback when I read it. I suppose I also like that a book/ an author achieved that…and I am concerned that the movie version might diminish that….I’ve never had a movie be “better”?

0
Carol

I can’t think of any movie I liked better than a book off hand-but don’t mind seeing movie versions especially once some time has passed (guess I like movies almost as much as books)…Handmaids had a big impact on me too-and my book club…we all felt the same & had a good discussion about its relevancy today.

0
Janie

@Carol My book club as well! I love movies too…for some reason…but maybe it is just because it was/is SO believable and frightening….?

0
Abbey

Havent read one yet dont like them gotta have erotic romance in it for me otherwise i get bored unless its a history book lol
