Slaughterhouse 5. If you can get past the absurd, it is a heartbreaking
anti war chronicle of PTSD.

I advise against the Book Thief: full of clichés, boring, predictable…
I recommend The Kindly Ones or the trilogie Berlin Noir of Philip Kerr

Beneath A Scarlet Sky, The Road Between Us, Winter Men, Slaughterhouse 5, Alone in Berlin, All The Light We Cannot See. I disliked The Nightingale as there are much better books on the subject. Book Thief is good but aimed at youngsters, as is Boy In Striped Pyjamas. Tattooist of Auschwitz is a lovely story but badly written.

The Kommandant’s Mistress by Alexandria Szeman makes you think, not easy to read but you get the hang of her changing the person who’s telling the story quite randomly.
