Hooray for you! My favorite mystery and an all time favorite book is The Nine Tailors. For Sayers newbies … if you’re a Sayers/Christie/English country house mystery NUT … or a devout Anglican who knows the subject, or a change bell ringer, or a highly literate resident of the fens, you will love this book right away, though some may need a third or fourth read-through to pick up all the details.
Any John Sanford. Prescott and Childs Agent Pendergast’s. Any Tony Heillerman’s. So many more. Louise Penny. Patrica Cornwall the early ones. Willian Kent Kruger
Nevada Barr – her main character is a Park Ranger & each book takes place in a different National Park; Louise Penny & Donna Leon for their characters and sense of place (Ontario, Canada & Venice, Italy respectively); Mary Higgins Clark – fast-paced stories, real page turners; Jonathan Kellerman – psychological thrillers (the perps are real creeps!); Harlan Coben writes very good stand-alone mysteries as well!
Sorry, I can’t narrow it down to one. Off the top off my head, I’d say “The Secrets She Keeps”, by Michael Robotham, “Behind Her Eyes”, by Sarah Pinborough, and “The Dry”, by Jane Harper.
There is a difference between mystery and thriller…if I have to narrow it down between a story that is both, the Charlie Parker series by John Connolly….mystery, thriller, sometimes scary, but all the time great writing.
I don’t believe in “bests,” but Taylor Stevens’ The Informationist is an intense thrill ride. Mary Stewart wrote my favorite classic thrillers, Elizabeth Peters wrote my favorite fun mysteries, and Margaret Maron’s The Bootlegger’s Daughter is probably my favorite all-around mystery series.
Presumed Innocent by Scott Turrow was so suspensful and made me a fan of his books. The movie, staring Harrison Ford was the most authentic book to movie depiction I have seen to date.
A Lesson Before Dying is a great book. It along with Rebecca are two books that I will never forget. They are on a list of 50 books to read before you die. I highly recommend both.
@Abby Hey no! I haven’t. I looked it up right after finishing ‘You’ but the reviews looked less than promising! Have you read that book? Would you recommend it?
Hard to narrow it down to one. I have enjoyed Harlan Coben, Elizabeth George and Louise Penny all for different reasons. Recently read Dry Harbor and liked it. Love Jo Nesbo and Harry Hole.
Nobody comes close to Agatha Christie. it would be hard to say which is my favourite, possibly Mrs McGinty’s Dead. Cards on the Table is very good too. And Murder at the Vicarage.
I love Agatha Christie but they are definitley mysteries not thrillers there are loads of golden age mysteries been re-issued by British Library (I think) and really I love them all definitely my favourite genre

About the Author by John Colapinto. This should be a movie!
The Fourth Monkey by JD Barker is pretty rad.
Presumed Innocent by Scott Turrow was so suspensful and made me a fan of his books. The movie, staring Harrison Ford was the most authentic book to movie depiction I have seen to date.
I read it years ago, but Intensity by Dean Koontz was one that stands out as a wild ride I could not put down.
