I probably wouldn’t as a read aloud but my 8’s read it as a choice novel

9 and up (only bc of language, I think 7-8 could handle the topic).

Definitely high school. The topics are more appropriate for high school. I’d even say tenth through twelfth grades. Freshmen are not very mature, unfortunately.

Agree, with the language and brief sexual references, 10th and up.

I have freshmen who loved this book.

@Melissa It really depends on the kids. I’ve had sophomores who weren’t mature enough to handle the material. You have to know your kids.

Depends on the reader. I have a mature 6th grade student who I let borrow my copy but I also taught her in 4th grade and she was already reading YA books. But I agree that 8th grade and up is most appropriate.

Handed it to an 8th grader just the other day. It depends on the reader.

That book is AMAZING. I would be cautious with any under 9th or 10th grade, though.

High School

I think it depends on the reader. I had a 6th grader read it and she gobbled it right up. I might have an 8th grader try who couldn’t handle it. It depends on the individual student and whether or not they can handle or connect with the topics.

The language makes me lean towards high school, content could probably be 8th grade (I’m in a fairly conservative area)

My 8th grade daughter loved it. Said it changed her perspective.

Some of my 7th graders are reading it- it depends on maturity not age

I’m kind of thinking high school. I personally LOVED it but didn’t buy it for my junior high kids.

I agree. It’s a fabulous book, but the language, violence, sex….not sure it’s appropriate for anyone under high school age. And this is coming from a teacher who lets kids read LOTS of things!

I listened to it with my own daughter and know of some 8th graders who have read it on their own. I had some really great conversations with her. Great for parent child book club.

Like if teens really do that anymore. YA and MA club?

I’ve had 8th graders read it this year and love it … but it is about maturity, I agree with others.
