What fantasy series out there basically has magic as a “recently discovered” thing, or “something that once was, but is now returning” kind of deal?

Kate Daniels Series (10 books) by Ilona Andrews

The world has suffered a magic apocalypse. We pushed the technological progress too far, and now magic returned with a vengeance. It comes in waves, without warning, and vanishes as suddenly as it appears. When magic is up, planes drop out of the sky, cars stall, electricity dies. When magic is down, guns work and spells fail.

It’s a volatile, screwed-up world. Magic feeds on technology, gnawing down on skyscrapers until most of them topple and fall, leaving only skeletal husks behind. Monsters prowl the ruined streets, werebears and werehyenas stalk their prey; and the Masters of the Dead, necromancers driven by their thirst for knowledge and wealth, pilot blood-crazed vampires with their minds.

In this world lives Kate Daniels. Kate likes her sword a little too much and has a hard time controlling her mouth. The magic in her blood makes her a target, and she spent most of her life hiding in plain sight. But sometimes even trained killers make friends and fall in love, and when the universe tries to kick them in the face, they kick back.

This reminds me of the Shadowrun books. The idea is that magic comes and goes in cycles and it’s been dormant for like 5000 years, and then suddenly comes back. The first one is Never Deal With a Dragon by Robert N. Charette and it’s REALLY good, but I think relatively unknown since it’s a book based on a role-playing game.

It’s been a while, but I seem to remember The Darksword Trilogy being like that. Most people don’t believe in Magic as Wheel of Time Starts too…

This is a great book. I’ve read it 3 times. 😛
Unfortunately, her other book, which is a book of short stories, was terrible. And I hear she is very ill and probably will not be writing any more books. 🙁

Brandon Sanderson’s Elantris is an interesting mystery/rediscovery of old magic. I was doubly impressed after reading to find out it was his debut novel! Told my wife that we’d see more of this guy?
