All the information you need can be found either on Google or the Amazon site. ?

Would rather hear from people that have experience with it rather then just googling it.

Kindle Unlimited is a subscription of $9.99/month where you get to access/borrow unlimited free reading up to 10 books. Return the book after reading and feel free to borrow another. The books has to be marked under ‘Kindle Unlimited’. There is a first month free trial before you allow them to charge you for 2nd month. I’m a Kindle Unlimited subscriber and so far loving it. There are so many series for you to explore in there.

@Missy do you get to keep a book on your kindle? Or you have to.return it?

Missy

@Nish No, I have to return it. Through Kindle Unlimited, we are allowed to borrow up to 10 titles. No time limit.

It’s an the same as a digital library but with subscription cost’s and a larger range of books.

I LOVE Kindle Unlimited. I’ve read soooooo many books that the service has paid for itself.

I like the idea of KU, but I hate that you don’t OWN any of the books you read. It’s just a digital library.

@Cherie right it’s not like it cost them any more to give you the book. Copy and paste cost nothing

1
Cherie

Yah, But they gotta make that money! (Even though libraries are free, and I’d much rather borrow a physical book than digital)

Brenda

Yeah…I feel like I can do better by buying $1.99 books. I rarely buy 5 a month and I get to keep them

1
Cherie

Brenda, I have almost 2000 ebooks on my paperwhite, 90% of them were free, lol. I’ve signed up with a lot of author newsletters that are always sending you free copies of their books, and author friends of theirs. Plus plenty of legit sites that either sell them at discounted prices or free. And of course looking up free ebooks on amazon, lol! I’ve found so many Indie gems. ❤️

I just think of it like Netflix. I can watch any movie in the program on Netflix but can’t keep it forever. I can do the same with KU.

1
Cherie

Good analogy Angie! I rarely watch any tv at all, so I didn’t really think of that.

0
Jacki

@Cherie you can buy all the books you borrow. You just have to click on buying option 1st

0
Cherie

I know, but then it’d be pointless to me to pay a fee for KU if I’m just going to buy them.

KU works for me when it’s in a good sale. 1.99 for 3 months or like right now, I have it 6 months free with my new kindle. I am a re-reader so if I love a book, I’ll probably buy it anyway to have for myself. It’s a good way to not spend money on books I hate. ? it’s really only worth it if you would have spent 10.00 a month on purchasing books.

0
Jacki

True but I noticed the ones that said read now can be bought for free

Rizu

atm is $1.99 for 3 months. Christmas special. really cheap way to see if you like it.

@Rizu I signed up for this ? I’ve used it loads so far. Read all the Lovely Lane books and working my way through Adele Abbot’s books (there are almost 30 of them!) so I’m enjoying it so far ?

I have Kindle Unlimited right now and I really enjoy it. When I signed up last month I got 3 months for $0.99. If they are having a special, that is the best time to try it. There aren’t a ton of “popular books”, but you can find a ton of great stuff by authors that aren’t that well known.

If you have never used it you can usually do a free trial. I honestly would never pay for it. It was okay but I have more options with my library and the apps they offer for free. I say try the free trial and see if you think it is worth the money.

I’m currently doing the free trial. I have found great books to read. I’m going to keep it but like everyone else do the free trial and see how you like it and go from there

I am on a trial and will cancel when its over. There are not a lot of books that I care to read. I have a friend who insists that I should keep it but I think I have read 1 KU book (and it was a bookclub selection) in 3 months.

I didn’t have much luck with it; most of the books I want to read were not available on kindle. Same situation with scribd. If you don’t read the mainstream popular authors, might not be a good option for you.

@Siobhan yes! I thought scribd was a cheaper alternative to audible; it is but it’s cheaper for a reason.

Daisy

I love it, the book I am looking for May not be on it but I can always find something. And there are always good deals and suggestions but please remember, brand new books are not usually included, so if you prefer new release books then it may not be for yoy. ?but that’s where the free trial is handy

While I like KU, I feel like scribd is a much better deal – you get far more not-self-published books, it’s easier to access on devices and look through for new reads, and not only do you get ebooks, you get UNLIMITED ebooks AND audiobooks (KU has a 10-ebook limit on checkouts)
Plus, rather than $9.99 a month for KU, it’s 2 months free for scribd (follow the link) and after it’s $8.99 a month — so it’s literally a dollar cheaper and you get unlimited audio and ebooks.

@Aimee can you get it on the kindle?

1
Aimee

Tiffany Shafer Yep! Kindle, normal web pages, ipad, phones – it’s a really nice app too! Basically, if you can download apps on it, you can get scribd.
It occurred to me that, like, kindle paperwhites don’t quite work the same though, nor do the older kindles, so while it’s most likely a yes, I edited this to include their info about it too juuuuust in case you’ve a specific type of kindle.

The reason you’re not noticing so many self published books is:

Scribd is considered wide and doesn’t mind if your books are on other platforms.

KU makes writers be exclusive to be in the program.

If most self publishers are in KU, they won’t be wide and thus you won’t see them.

1
Aimee

That’s true, I do occasionally look through, like, ‘all of fantasy, starting with most recently added’ on Scribd and see many more self-published.

There is a special out not sure for how long, here is the link https://www.amazon.com/kindle-dbs/promoLanding?promoCode=b4a80c9c-88f2-480c-b808-dae143f2b36a&campaignId=b4a80c9c-88f2-480c-b808-dae143f2b36a&ref_=&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-3&pf_rd_r=B938BF3R1RMXC5DJTSE5&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=53b8750c-fe3f-4381-a499-de89846ba9c5&pf_rd_i=17276826011&tag=maryse-20

I decided on Scribd instead of KU, but I may get KU as well. It doesn’t bother me that I don’t own the books, I just like being able to read what I can’t find at the library. If I really love, that is when I’ll buy a book.

I do this too – I read a lot sometimes and need more content than most 🙂
