Classic, iconic fantasy novel. Hard to go wrong.

That’s just tolkien’s style in general. I read it when I was 8 yrs old and then LOTR at age 10 and loved them all but I reckon if I read it now as an adult I’d find it a tad slow….slow but still awesome ?

Love it! It shows how Bilbo goes from a hobbit who never has any adventures (because hobbits don’t have adventures, you see) to doing extraordinary things way outside of his comfort zone. I love Tolkien’s theme that you are more than you think you are.

Hmm, it’s presequel to LOTR, so it’ll be just as slow as it. While it is “slow” that’s because he puts a lot into character and world building ^^ i much prefer them creating their world in my head

Its horribly slow to me but still will always remain a classic. They didn’t give Bjorn a good enough roll in the movie. He was way more epic in the book

I never liked the Hobbit. I’d enjoyed Lord of the Rings, and everyone said the same characters were in Hobbit, so I gave it a try… but I found it boring and a bit childish (probably because I was older than the target audience, by then. I had the same trouble with the Narnia books, for all that I’d enjoyed the TV series). I’ve not bothered with the Hobbit films.

The book is fantastic. The movie trilogy is meh.
Movies and books are different kinds of media and have to tell stories in different ways.
I enjoyed the LOTR trilogy it made perfect sense to release that as a trilogy. But the Hobbit should have been just one film. Gotta milk that money cow I guess. That being said I enjoyed the films anyway but I own the LOTR trilogy and not the Hobbit.

The novel is short and sweet. Not what one would call a real difficult book. I don’t think hobbit is slow it’s actually one of his faster paced novels

Classic, read it many times but it would be considered YA fantasy nowadays

Probably, but The Hunger Games series, Divergent series, and Ender’s Game I think are all considered YA, but look at the adult following they have.

Plenty of adults read YA

I’ve read the Lord of the Rings a couple of dozen times over the last forty years. I’ve read the Silmarillion maybe five times, I’ve read The Hobbit once when I was nine and I’ve never been able to get through it again.

I personally didn’t like it.

It’s too slow in a lot of ways. Tolkien writes in a very pre-1914 style (which is peculiar given the books were written in the 1930-50s) that is more “tell don’t show”. I personally hate the omniscient narrator POV. Smaugs death was incredibly anti-climatic and The Battle Of The Five Armies was so hastily slapped in at the end & felt so unnecessary, especially considering how abrupt it was.

THe book read more like a series of very tiny adventures where they constantly got caught and when they actually got to their final destination, they really did nothing. The fact Smaug is dealt with in a periphery part of the setting was really just a slap in the face considering the entire book builds towards his confrontation and then it ends in the most pathetic, nonsensical way possible.

The movie ? Yes ..it drags on forever …The book much faster than what happens in the actual trilogy.

Love the Hobbit, all time favourite book first read as a child. Many childhood pets from hamsters to goldfish were named Bilbo ??

I just finished it– not a fan. I respect his accomplishments/work as an author, but his words did not capture my attention or pull me in. Not even a little bit. I’m apprehensive to read LoTR now. . . .
