Van Helsing in Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Repeatedly.

Whaaat…? Okay, we need explanations!

1
Mel

@Siri – I love the book but he’s just such a misogynistic, know it all trope of a character. It’s phrases like: “Lucy has the man brain” and that ridiculous accent (yes, in my head, I know). By the end of the book I am seriously routing for Dracula and I want him to get bitten. Badly. Sorry, not sorry ?

5
Siri

@Mel Okay, fair enough—but I loved him as a comic relief type character!??

That’s who I’d sucker punch! And Catherine!

1
Mel

Even so, it is one of my favourite books. I’ve read it 5 or 6 times. I’m a sucker for punishment!

1
Barter

@Mel It’s one of my favourite novels because Heathcliff and Cathy are so miserable to each other.

1
Mel

@Barter – you can’t beat a good dollop of angst and drama!

Probably Amy from little women or Teddy from little women…

3

YannieQuestion author

Why? Curious to know

0
Jen

Amy because she annoyed me through out the entire book, I always felt that she thought she was better than her family and Teddy because I feel that he only married Amy to become a March family member. I think he loved Amy but not the way he loved Jo.

2
Jen

Like Amy was his back up plan

1
YannieQuestion author

@Jen very good answer. I forgot about that part. But Jo became happy with her man. Makes me want to watch it again.

1
Jen

Well originally Louisa didn’t want Jo to end up with Friedrich and wanted her to be single (like her because the book is based off her life). The publishers thought it was too risqué

Sorry about going on my nerd tangent. My favorite book lol

4
Briana

One of my favorites too! Yeah I never truly loved Amy like I always loved and felt relatable to Jo.

1
Jennifer

Amy reminds me of Lydia from Pride and Prejudice. So yes, definitely a sucker punch.

4
Reply
Briana

Don’t forget how horrible Mother was to them.

3
Anne

The Grandmother was bad but their Mother was WORSE!

1
Latanya

I know. But Grandmother was introduced as the evil one first. I think Corrine was definitely a product of her environment and the result of such an appalling and abusive childhood. Remember her father wasn’t a saint either. So I hate to say it, but I felt a little merciful for the mother. Just a little. Enough not to sucker punch her.?

0
Anne

I lost any and all pity I might have had for their mother when SHE starved them and then fed them ARSENIC!

1
Briana

Same with me. Once it was discovered that SHE fed them Arsenic and starved them, I lost whatever hope I had in her. In my eyes she became worse than Grandmother because she’s supposed to protect them as their mother. Plus she took them there knowing how badly they might be treated.

2
Latanya

I ended up loathing the mother too, especially when the little boy died. But I still have it in for the grandmother. Corinne’s cruelty was cultivated by that wicked woman. No excuse, just fact. That’s what is so great about books and their well written characters. Everyone has different opinions and perspectives.

Surprisingly, I haven’t read Little Women yet but I’m reading Little Men right now and Jo March (now Bhaer) appears to be a totally happy and fulfilled woman. I want to read Little Women when I finish this one.

1
Soraya

The only thing that sort of redeemed the situation is that Gabriel Byrne played the professor in the movie. I read Little Men and Alcott did a repeat of something that I totally hated. Check me again when you’re finished. I don’t want to spoil it.

1
Germaine

Ok! Now I’ll be reading faster. 🙂

2
Michele

Jo annoyed me too.

1
YannieQuestion author

@Soraya a young christian Bale played the boy

1
Soraya

@Yannie I remember but back then I used to have the hots for Gabriel Byrne ? so when he was the professor I was able to console myself. Lol!
