@Sandy Oh. I’ve only seen the movie, but it’s so horribly sad! ?

Night by Elie Wiesel, though one of the saddest books I’ve ever read, is by far the best WWII/Holocaust survival book I’ve ever read. It was short and informational, but still very poetic and profound. But if you wanted to try to get her into other historicql events as well, Salem Possessed by Paul Boyer and Stephen Nissenbaum is phenomenal. It goes over the political reason why the Salem Witch Trials happened and how it affected the town. I hate non-fiction usually but this one never felt like a slew of information was being thrown at me, it was very well written and had me hooked start to end.

Night may be more suitable for high school level readers? Just my opinion.

I was in 6th grade when I read it, but my mom also read Poe and Plath to me as bedtime stories when I was a wee thing, so I guess by then I was used to that kind of emotional terror in reading… You might be right, but if it’s something she’s already into, itd depend more on her personal abilities in reading dark content… And now that I think of it, Salem Possessed does use some advanced language that she might need a dictionary for here and there… Wow thats kind of a hard age to get good historial reading material for in general :\

1
BrendaQuestion author

Yeah. She watched Schindlers List last weekend and can handle the somewhat dark stuff, but the reading level part would need to be about her age range.

1. What’s her reading level? (I was reading well above 6th grade level by then)
2. What is her interest? History? Or historical?

0
Reply
BrendaQuestion author

@Heidi She reads at her grade level. She was really into Dork Diaries and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, but this school year she has suddenly taken an interest in ww2. I think she likes historical/drama.

0
Heidi

@Brenda I liked the Time-Life series. That fulfilled both actual history (which can be rather dry reading) and historical (which is often more dramatic than truthful).

Look for books that are slightly different such as about Bletchley Park and Land Girls as they are different to the norm. There must be a Zoe DamBusters book too.

My daughter is 12 and loves books about WW2. Her favourites are The War that Saved my Life and The War I Finally Won (the sequel), and she has asked for Once by Maurice Gleitzman (a series of four Once, Then, Now and After) as it has been recommended by her friend. She also loved Number the Stars.

Just thought of an excellent series called The Zion Covenant by Bodie Thoene. Need to read them in order though. They are fiction but historically accurate and easy to read if I remember correctly. You need to read them in the correct order to cover the history chronologically.

Do not confuse it with Zion Chronicles which covers after WWII.

They do have a Christian element to it but that doesn’t distract from the historical narrative following a family/ different people through the war and how it impacts them in different ways. And it takes you right through Europe.
