Not sure… i can remember reading all the way back in Kindergarten and always having a book. Some though would be the borrowers, curdoroy, little women, the littles
The Sight by David Clement-Davies and Wolf Brother/The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness by Micheal Paver and Dragon Lance Chronicles by Margaret Weis and Tracey Hickman
My parents read to us as children, and trips to the library were a commonplace treat, so I always remember loving the written word. Berenstain Bears, Amelia Bedelia, Ralph S. Mouse, Pippi Longstocking… these were some of my favorites as a child. I got away from reading for a while, and it was To Kill a Mockingbird that brought me back. ❤️
My mom read Hedi and Wizard of Oz to us. I also remember the House that JACK built and We love Kindergarten but the Little House Books are the first I remember reading independently.
All of them. 😉 Seriously, I really don’t remember. We didn’t have a lot of money growing up so the library was a fantastic treat for us. I was going there and checking out books to read as far back as I can remember. I was always ahead of my classmates in reading skills because of growing up in the library. <3
Anything with a storyline. I first started reading voraciously in Hebrew, when I was six. Then when I was twelve switched to English (we were in England for the year). Went through a lousy period after brain surgeries when I couldn’t read real books. Discovered ereaders 3 years later and went back to bookworming. I can’t believe I don’t remember which book it was that I first read cover to cover on my nook. Perhaps because I hungrily devoured everything in sight to make up for those lost years.
The Little House books..and every title I could find in the Childhood of Famous Americans series. Then there was Indian Captive by Lois Lenski..and all of Sonia Bleekers books about various Native American people’s. All of these books sent me looking for similar topics, which sent me on other rabbit trails. God bless the bunny trails.
I can’t pick just one. When I was growing up we went to our small town general store. I was allowed to get a Little Golden Book every week. I also grew up on Beverly Cleary, Judy Blume, Encyclopedia Brown, Laura Ingalls Wilder and the Sweet Valley High Series. Once I got to high school I found To Kill a Mockingbird which became my all time favorite.
I had a pile of Golden Books, Rand McNally books, and McMillan books from grocery stores. My dad was not a well educated man, and not a big reader for himself, but he read those to me, and both parents allowed me to pick any book I wanted when we went to garage sales..so I had a book connection long before I went to school. This was in the early sixties, before anybody had written anything about “how to raise a reader”.

hush hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
Riders of The Purple Sage by Zane Grey – my dad read it to me while I sat on his lap. That’s what made me decide I wanted to be a writer, too.

Little House and series of unfortunate events

Little Women
Rebecca, no question. I still love it.
So hard to pick! Always have loved books. But Jane Eyre, Gone With the Wind, and Little Women are among the early books that blew me away.
That would have to be The Happy Hollisters. It introduced me to the series book and I never looked back.
The Secret Garden.
