There are loads!! Enjoyment is a big one! Chance to escape from my world, learn how others think but one of my main ones is to keep my brain awake and functioning – close relatives have dementia and I want to do my best to not get it – I figure developing my thought process is a good way to help.

Reading a book you’re desperate to read is also a good way to motivate!!

I tend to live in my head anyway so instead of obsessing on the latest thing I hear in the news or what ever, I choose to read. I also think so much of what is on tv is awful so I will read. How else could I sit through an entire day of bowl games yesterday? Hahaha?

I read to learn about history, other cultures and religious/ritual systems, world mythology, and archaeology. I also arm-chair travel to countries East and West through books. And I love a well-written mystery–Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes are my favorites, but I have discovered modern mysteries that are real humdingers. And yes, I read novels: Russian and English classics in particular.

Learning about new things or people, escaping reality, getting absorbed in a story, exercising my brain, solving a mystery along with the characters (I read a lot of crime books). Different types of books give me different types of pleasure. For example, I just read a memoir about prison by a federal prisoner, and I’m so glad I’m not in prison!

I would die inside and be absolutely lost without books. Books keep me warm and fullfilled inside my soul. Books give me a hand to get over my problems, a door to escape feom reality. I don’t need “motivations”. I can’t imagine my life without reading…
