Vicki Tooman Guiltner I watched part of the first Twilight movie and decided sticking myself with pins would be preferable. I LOVED the old b&w vampire movies with Christopher Lee. Dracula, the book, I found rather plodding with Van Helsing droning on.
Since I barely limped through The Hobbit, I doubt I try LOTR. The movies were great, and I love fantasy, so I was shocked to feel so put off by the Hobbit. Life is short..will read other things.
Mostly anything modern written in the last ten to twenty years. I cannot see myself getting into Harry Potter, Game of Thrones, or Fifty Shades of Grey (gag!). I’ll read modern nonfiction books about contemporary issues (mostly political) but modern fiction doesn’t much appeal to me.
-Anything by Orwell (tried, blah). -Anything written like pre-1950 (there are a few exceptions, like The Scarlett Letter but I was forced to read that initially) -Erotica, no desire to read about other people having sex. I can tolerate scenes in books that are 99% actual plot. -Most nonfiction bores me to death also
“Most” YA, anything political, most “chick lit”. I got stuck reading Twilight because my daughter read them & I generally will read what they’re reading because I’m THAT Mom. 50 Shades, I read the first one & laughed. It’s Twilight fan fic with the names changed & there is NOTHING redeemable about it. You want REAL erotica that’s BDSM related? Read Anne Rice’s Beauty’s Punishment trilogy, etc. UGH. Anything that’s modern/urban paranormal fantasy.
I tend to think you don’t know till you try, but I’ve had Anna Karenina, Catch 22 and Gone with the Wind on my shelf for a while and they’re not calling to me at the moment!!
I read 50 Shades but I can’t get over the fact that he was continually raped and abused as a child and that was his way of dealing with it. I don’t get how women can think it is hot when he was dealing with his childhood abuse throughout the book ?♀️?♀️
@Harleen i dont know why a lot of people love SK.. Well, truly his books are all amazing but i just cant stand the long narrations.. Like you have to go through a haystack before getting on the real story.. Just cant stand it
That’s the beauty of King for some people. Oh he does ramble on in some books. But when he’s good he’s really good which explains why he’s still no 1 today.
the left behind series, anything by nora roberts-icckkk! i tried to read the first harry potter book because my son loved them so much, but i couldn’t finish it. it was just boring to me. great question!
You never know what you’ll like until you try it… and that can change with time.
If you dismiss something out of hand, you’re doing yourself a disservice. While I’ve come to learn more about my likes and dislikes over time, I wouldn’t want to rob myself of an experience.
While l agree, I also know that if I can’t get through the first few chapters, or writing style, I’ll never finish the rest. At that point, I tend to avoid those writers. Just my opinion of course, we’re all different.
Perfect point Rob. I think many avid readers may be guilty of punishing an author for their success. Just because its popular doesn’t make it bad. To my shame I’ve done this myself. Only to find that the Harry Potter stories aren’t so bad, I quite like James Patterson, and a song of ice and fire despite its length, is quite good.
I tried fifty shades. Didn’t make it through the first book. I’m no stranger to erotic fiction so the subject matter wasn’t too much, but i simply couldn’t get in to the story. Not sure why.
LOTR I have read The Hobbit several times and thoroughly enjoyed this intro every time. When it comes to LOTR Book 1 — I become overwhelmed within the first 20 pages.
I agree James, I have read a few of his books and really can’t see him as a great horror writer. Now Anne Rice is a completely different story. I love her stories, characters and her writing style is fantastic.
@Michael I have tried storm of the century, it, langoliers, Salem’s Lot, IT and a couple others. I just do not enjoy the writing style. I just keep thinking he could have said this more effectively with less words.
@James i still have some of his books left unread.. I have second doubts to read them fear i will be disappointed again.. SK doesn’t have any appeal to me anymore…
I’m yet to read Stephen King but definitely not horror. Please don’t recommend horror. Suspense and mystery I can do. Not horror. No!!!! I can watch it although I don’t see the point but I refuse to read it. Books paint a more clearer picture and are more intense even without sound effects!!! And that’s way more powerful. So I can’t.
I’m with you all the way! No horror and definitely NO Stephen King! With so much wonderful literature to read, I don’t feel the need to scare myself to death for the sake of a book. But, each to his own!
Not all of Stephen King’s books are horror. Try The Green Mile AND / OR Dolores Claiborne both are excellent books and neither are scary. Another great book, albeit long, is 11/22/63.
@Natalie i took a look at 11/22/63 at the prompting of other members. I have read several books concerning the death of Pres. Kennedy, and did not care to read another. I have not read The Green Mile – I saw the movie and was uncomfortable with the entire story. I checked Goodreads for a review of Dolores Claiborne, and again did not feel that I would be comfortable with the content. When the bulk of a writer’s work is horror, and I believe that he has written over 60, I consider him to be an author of horror stories and I would much prefer to read authors I enjoy. Just me I guess….
I don’t like spy or any books that have lots of physical action in them like action thrillers. I also may be a traitor to my own gender but I much prefer to read books by female writers. It may be that I have spent way too much time reading the classics. But women seem to have a much better style of writing. They get right to the point, are more emotional in the writing and the wording is so much more beautiful. Whereas so many male writers seem to go on and on about nothing before they actually get to the point. So many books by male writers you could skip a multitude of pages before you actually get to the story.
50 Shades of Grey
Same
@Paula agree
Same
Same
Same.
Same here. I’m not interested and will never be.
The hunger games and Fifty Shades of Grey and the shatter me series

one of my favorite books
Yep. I have no desire at all.
It put me to sleep ?♀️
I can’t do anything written in that era. The language just immediately kills my desire to read it. I just prefer contemporary writing styles.

Since I barely limped through The Hobbit, I doubt I try LOTR. The movies were great, and I love fantasy, so I was shocked to feel so put off by the Hobbit. Life is short..will read other things.
I wasn’t overly enthused with The Hobbit either and doubt I’ll read LOTR. Great movies though.
@Bronwyn It helped that my teens were huge fans, and helped me with background as we watched at home..

“Most” YA, anything political, most “chick lit”. 50 Craps . God I hate that book .
The hate you give
50 Shades of Gray. Sounds like poorly written soft porn to me.
That’s 100% exactly what it is. I hate to trash talk a book but it’s just garbage. It should have stayed a fanfic.
The fault in our stars. Fifty shades of Grey. 13 reasons why.
I respect your decisions, but 13 Reasons Why was excellent, just sayin’.

None. Why would I ever want to limit myself?
You never know what you’ll like until you try it… and that can change with time.
If you dismiss something out of hand, you’re doing yourself a disservice. While I’ve come to learn more about my likes and dislikes over time, I wouldn’t want to rob myself of an experience.
You have a point. However, I have discovered over these many years that if I don’t like a writer’s style or topics then it’s not my cup of tea.
What you describe sounds like an informed response rather than dismissing a series out of hand.
James Patterson, 50 shades anything, Harry Potter, Danielle Steele anything
I thought I was the only oddball who would mention James Patterson, Danielle Steele, Harry Potter… glad to know I’m in good company ….
I need to add Steele and Patterson too.
I tried fifty shades. Didn’t make it through the first book. I’m no stranger to erotic fiction so the subject matter wasn’t too much, but i simply couldn’t get in to the story. Not sure why.
ill never read it. i just dont want to
LOTR I have read The Hobbit several times and thoroughly enjoyed this intro every time. When it comes to LOTR Book 1 — I become overwhelmed within the first 20 pages.

Harry Potter. Not the movies and definitely not the books. Maybe I’m just not into fantasy. And vampire stories. A huge NO.
Same ?
See I love Harry Potter. I love the Lord of the Rings movies, but the book itself I found dry and boring.
That is too bad. I loved Harry Potter.
@Alicia Oops! I misread. A surprising number of people think LOTR is boring.
@Alicia I also haven’t watched LOTR films. Won’t read the books. Star wars and transformers too. Argh!
I love science fiction however I will never read(well finish) dune.
Stephen king novels(tried). People tell me he is the greatest. I just do not see it.
What have you tried? If you’ve not tried IT, The Dark Half, Misery or 11.22.63 I recommend trying those.
I agree James, I have read a few of his books and really can’t see him as a great horror writer. Now Anne Rice is a completely different story. I love her stories, characters and her writing style is fantastic.
Just can’t stand the looooonnnggg narrations in every story he has.. Seems like we feel the same
@Jacob I do agree Anne rice is decent. A few of her books seat a bit to far into erotica for my taste though.
@Michael I have tried storm of the century, it, langoliers, Salem’s Lot, IT and a couple others. I just do not enjoy the writing style. I just keep thinking he could have said this more effectively with less words.
@Whella exactly, what I just said is all his books leave me feeling he could have said the sentence more effectively with less words.
@James i still have some of his books left unread.. I have second doubts to read them fear i will be disappointed again.. SK doesn’t have any appeal to me anymore…
I’m yet to read Stephen King but definitely not horror. Please don’t recommend horror. Suspense and mystery I can do. Not horror. No!!!! @Michele Fair enough.
Thanks for the recommendation, @Natalie
@Tshepy You’re very welcome. I do hope you try them and enjoy them. =)
@Natalie yes
