Well, I’m from the US, so lets drill down to my state. It’s a little less broad.

Leaves of Grass. It’s a poetry collection from the 19th century based on the lives of people in the area.

Codex 632 by José Rodrigues dos Santos, Baltasar & Blimunda by José Saramago (Nobel Prize in ’98), The Maias by Eça de Queirós (these last two were required reading when I was in school), Equator by Miguel Sousa Tavares.

El Amante Turco (The Turkish Lover) by Esmeralda Santiago. It was written here in the states but all her books have strong ties to her Puerto Rican heritage.
