A God in Ruins by Kate Atkinson. Best twist ever! It also had me crying? I need to get another copy so I can re read it even though I never read a book more than once.

@Jenny sound tempting. What is it about?

0
Jenny

@Sangye it’s a companion book to life after life. It tells the life story of Teddy who’s sister Ursula was the main character in life after life. I have to admit I did struggle part way through but I was so glad I continued reading it.

Isabel

@Jenny phenomenal I agree so stunning

Hmmm. Just read up on it on Good Reads. Doesn’t sound familiar. But the cover sure is. I think I had it on my old Kindle. Got it for free somehow. Maybe I never did read it ?

@Kimberly and then they RUINED the twist in the movie! (By eliminating it!!)

0
Kimberly

@Jackie For which book? I rarely watch movies based on books because I get too aggravated when they change things. I also don’t like when they cast actors that are totally different from my mental image of the characters! lol

1
Jackie

@Kimberly My Sisters Keeper. They took it the whole twist!!

0
Kimberly

@Jackie That’s sad. Very few books end in a way that completely surprises me. That one definitely had me going “oh wow!”

0
Jackie

@Kimberly right?! That’s what made the book so good!
The movie is just a sad movie about a kid with cancer (that dies).

Most of Harlan Coben’s stand alones. He brings you a satisfying conclusion to a breath taking ride, and then, two pages later, turns it upside down leaving you stunned. Great reads!

1

Shame the movie ruined the ending.

1

@Brittany – me too! My husband thought I was crazy. ?

1
Brittany

@Lesley so did mine ? I woke him up with my blubbering and he couldn’t believe I was crying so hard over a book ?

1
Brittany

@Donna I agree. The movie was way less ‘heartbreaking’ the way they did it. If that makes sense without sounding cold.

Atonement… so subtle but casts a whole new light.

A God in Ruins – definitely pulls the rug completely from under your feet.

Defending Jacob

We need to talk about Kevin

All the above have amazing denouements, but part of the pleasure was not knowing in advance they were coming… so just wondering if you may not get the same experience… as you are forewarned!

1
Melodie

@Elyse they changed to ending in the movie and all 3 of us watching were mad ?

1
Elyse

I totally TOTALLY understand what you’re saying!!!!
I thought about it a long time. First I was crushed when I read the book and I couldn’t move- right? I was crying.! I also read it when it first came out before it was hyped and everyone in the world read it. But then I thought about the ending the book and I realized how perfect it was because it really had you think about the whole purpose.
So I was upset with the ending of the movie too but then I thought about it for a long time. And I agree it ruin things a lot but I think for a wide audience on a screen… Hollywood I kind of can understand why they made that choice….
Ha ha ha but only proving that 95% of the time books are always better than the movie!!!!
Holiday hugs!!!!- from Mexico on our 40th anniversary vacation

I had to read the ending 4 times for it to sink in. Happy Anniversary, always tell each other how much you love them ❤️

The ending to The Couple Next Door made me LAUGH SOOOOOO HARD!!!!!
BUT….

To the End of the World ( years ago)… had me more shocked and sad than any book I have ever read…
BUT NOTE.
I went into that book 100% BLIND at the time.
I knew NOTHING!!!!

I know lots NOW…
But no other book has hurt me more.

1

Vicky

who is ‘to the end of the world’ by please? I can’t find it on google & I am 100% blind to it atm!

1
Elyse

David Grossman – An Israeli author.

It’s not a thriller – ( we were asked about a shocking ending… and I know most of you associate this with psychological thriller type books & I do too –
Yet… this book was the exception.

At the ‘start’ of the story
3 characters are in a hospital. At first – you don’t know why – or even their ages – but they start talking to each other in the middle of the night.
The book will soon skip ahead 30 years –
These 3 people are friends.
It’s one of my favorite books.
Not everyone likes it – but many do. It did win awards.
If you need a book to be thrilling fast -then skip it – but if you like interesting characters – dialogue- complex relationships – you might like this.

Elyse

Oops —and you couldn’t find it because of my mistake
“To The End Of The Land”

I didn’t realize I made a boo boo
Forgive me. I’m sorry to have made it difficult for you

1
