My dad read Golden Books and those little Rand McNally Elf books..Red Riding Hood, Three Bears, Little Black Sambo, ect. Then in school, our librarian, Mrs Lovett read to the kindergarteners and 1st graders. In fifth and sixth grade, Mrs. Rucker and Mrs. Schoech read to us..great books like A Wrinkle in Time, Summer on the Salt Fork, and Trouble River.
My mom didn’t read to me but she often recited poetry she had memorized when she was in school. They both fed my growing interest in books by buying whatever books I wanted from garage sales.
Yes. My Dad read to us a lot. Even read poetry to us. I’m 74 and can still close my eyes and hear him reading the Raven by Edgar Allen Poe. Also The Telltale Heart.
I was, my Aunt and Brother read to me… I remember many lovely evenings listening to stories in the cadences of their voices and feeling a part of magic of the story.
My mum. My clearest memories is of her reading while she breastfed. There were four of us in 5 years so while she fed my brother and read to us I had my (then) 18 month old sister on my lap and my (then) 3 year old sister sat on the other side. Also a very sneaky way to keep us all in one spot.
Also the big kids at school. When I was 5 there were only 8 of us in the whole school so the big ones were allowed to read to us for part of silent reading. I still remember how much I loved it, and now I’m very very grateful for their patience!
I started reading to myself when I was 5 so I suspect that’s why my memories swap from being read to to reading to Enid Blyton about then even though I know mum kept reading to us.
Mom. Now we read together silently.
My mom and my grandmother
