What type of stories do you enjoy? Fantasy? Romance? Mystery?

@Shinda I enjoy Robert B Parker. He’s an easier read. You might enjoy young adult books too because they are usually easier/quicker reads.

No shame, I tried reading them at 28 and couldn’t get into it. I am starting the series, the series of unfortunate events in Jan!

Honestly get a library card- my town card gets me access to online and audio and other local libraries. Just browse and pick off shelves or wht they have available online. It’s the best way to find your own things and some of the BEST stuff I have read is free stuff for my amazon kindle! Free means if you start and hate it, all it cost ya was a bit of time and now you know! Also, I love young adult books for easy reads with (usually) good messages!

@Katie i have a library cardn just looking for direction. I honestly feel so overwhelmed when going in there as I am a brand new reader. But I do do audiobooks on my way to and from work, but those are more educational and not so much for pleasure.

@Shinda it can be a lot of you have a big library! I usually get one that I wanted or was recommended and then just one that I grab. In school they would tell us to read an excerpt and see if we ours follow it or if we got interested too

My favorite series is One for the Money by Janet Evanovich. It’s a comical mystery. And easy to read.

My husband is not an avid reader and only just started reading for fun in the past couple of years.

He likes the Dresden files (which we refer to as Harry Potter for grownups). And he just read “the summoner” series and really liked those too.

Amanda Hocking has some fun fantasy too that is easy to read and sucks you in.

my favourite fantasy books I read this year were: Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor, Starless by Jacqueline Carey & Child of a Mad God by R.A. Salvatore. two are first books in a series, one possibly a standalone (Starless) though I personally would love more in that world.
the shadowhunter books by Cassandra Clare are also good imho, but more urban fantasy. the Infernal Devices is 3 books, the Mortal Instruments is 6 books & the Dark Artifices is 3 books. plus there are short stories about the characters too (Bane Chronicles & Tales from Shadowhunter Academy)

I second the Janet evanovich books for new readers. Def got me back into it, although they become very repetitive so I only made it through about 14 or 15 of them.

Heather Graham has some good books. An interesting trio was ghost shadow, ghost moon, and ghost night.

A Curious case of the dog in the nighttime, it’s kind of a funny story, summer sisters

Nicholas Sparks or Danielle Steel books are fun, easy reads for romance. Robin Cook and James Patterson’s Alex Cross books are good crime drama. Twilight series for vampire drama/love…is a YA but good. Alice Hoffman for fantasy.

Old favorite is Dick Francis. I’ve recommended him to a lot of new readers. He was a jockey, then newspaper reported before he became a mystery writer. (Because of his newspaper experience, he’d write at a 6th grade reading level – most papers write this level, but his books were for and about adults without sex or graphic violence.) A lot of his early books involved horses, but he later branched into other fields. I’d also recommend any YA that captured your interest. It’s so nice to welcome a new reader to the wonderful world of books!
