The names don’t glide off the tongue but they are memorable! I didn’t like them either ?

I listened to them on audio book so it worked ok for me. But girl I hear you! I hate it when that happens

It definitely has a reason though

Reading them, I have a hard time. Listening was a bit better. Except one book, that I can’t remember the title anymore, but only because the name had 3 slightly different pronunciations. Drove me insane.

I hate the names of the characters in Throne of Glass! Like why is Chaol pronounced like Kale? Also why is his name Chaol?

Laurel

All of the names aren’t bad but I just hate that one so much!

0
Kristina

@Laurel lol I pronounce it k-all. I really hate saying his name ?

1
Laurel

@Kristina I’ve made it so much of a joke that I can’t never take him seriously

0
Heather

she made his name when she first wrote the book at 16. It’s supposed to be like “chaos” but she swapped the S for an L. Haha.

0
Laurel

@Heather isn’t that what editors are for? Haha

0
Jackie

I thought it was like Kyle so that made it bearable ?

0
Laurel

@Jackie I said it like Cole until I saw a pronunciation guide in the back of the first book.

0
Heather

@Laurel yes and her editor actually suggested changing it but she didn’t want to and fans of the series love him that way. I personally think it’s creative but if I hadn’t watched any videos prior to reading the series I would’ve butchered the pronunciation. I was just surprised to find that a majority of the other fancy names in the series actually ARE real.

1
Laurel

He is forever Kale to me now. I loved him so much in the first two books and hated him in QoS. I’m optimistic that he’ll be better from here on out. He seems to be over his prejudice against magic users and Fae so ?

1
Heather

i finished the series last month and it was really good. ToD is actually fantastic even though he’s one of the only characters we’re familiar with in it. So yes continue!

1
Morgan

I hated that name too.

Glad I’m not the only one!! And then the author used the word “arse” a few times! It’s driving me crazy!

I feel like she just phoned it in on that name ? ” shit ran outta names can I call her arse..no I cant arse no.. ARSINOE”

1
Anita

I almost didn’t finish the book because the name bothered me so much. But the story started picking up so I went with it.

I change them in my head. I will literally pretend their name is something else. ??‍♀️

What’s wrong with Arsinoe? It’s the name of many Egyptian princesses and queens

I couldn’t make it through the first Temeraire book (it’s a long series by one of my favorite authors), partially because the name Temeraire was in almost every other sentence. I tried so hard to move past it.

Going thru that with A Man Called Ove. The book is really good but I keep stumbling over the name

I like Arsinoe but I’m familiar with it from reading about Ancient Egyptian stuff. I don’t hate but struggle with Eastern European inspired names sometimes because I cannot begin to guess the pronunciations. Although that’s improved greatly in the age of smart phones and easily googled audio pronunciation.

@Tara I love that my mom would sing songs with Bonnie in them like My Bonnie lies over the ocean, Oh dear, and Loch Lomond she would change them and sing my sisters names sometimes just to be fair

Sometimes I think people write books just to use their weird-ass names. ?

I hate when too many characters have names starting with the same letter. I will seriously yell at my book, BUT YOU ALREADY GAVE ME THREE S-CHARACTERS!! I CAN”T KEEP THEM STRAIGHT!!!
Such is the way my brain categorizes characters.

Or Wolf Hall, where half the characters are named Thomas. ?‍♀️

Barbara

I can never read that book then without it ending up burning in our chiminea.

0
Charlotte

Game of Thrones springs to mind here!

2
Stephanie

@Charlotte yes I was about to say that! I’m like…who? I’m glad the show changed some of their names.

2
Barbara

I havent read Game of Thrones, but, even with watching the show, I sometimes say, Who?

Rachel

This is me right now trying to read Carve the Mark! I will read some books out loud with my boyfriend and this is our most recent choice and I have to stop every time I get to a new name!

Lol no I normally try it out and either pronounce it my way or just look over at the name and move on to the other words

Sometimes when the names are really ridiculous it annoys me.

1

Jodie

I refused to even start a book because the main character was called Moo.
If the names are convoluted then I give them easier ones in my head.

I was reading a so-so book where the character suddenly realised who she ‘really’ was…and she was called Rain. Cue lots of ‘Rain is free, Rain doesn’t break’ cliches and lots of eye rolls from me!

I gave up on a crime thriller recently because the female detective was called Summer Storm? I knew I couldn’t take the books seriously after that!

I STILL don’t know how to pronounce “Kvothe” from the Kingkiller Chronicles. When my friend and I were talking about the books, we just called him “K” cause we kept stumbling over his name.

@Stephanie I love the book but oh man every time his name was said I would pronounce it differently to see if anything made sense ? I think I read somewhere it’s Ka-voth though!

0
Jillian

Yes!!! ? I can’t believe i found someone else reading it. I’m really enjoying it too. I’m struggling with it a bit but I’m on the home stretch and I can’t wait to see how it ends!

0
Bonnie

I’m only about a third of the way. I keep saying is she going to sleep with him no she shouldn’t but is she? Don’t tell me. I will probably be done with the water cure tomorrow so I will get back to it next week.

0
Bonnie

@Jillian I’m reading the water cure because it’s the book in the buzzfeed book club

0
Jillian

@Bonnie I won’t spoil a thing! I just joined the book club group so I’m a little late to the party, but The Water Cure looks great!
