Many young people do a lot of their reading on devices, so it’s not surprising they don’t know what bookends are. Plus, even if they grew up in book-filled homes, that doesn’t necessarily mean their were any bookends. Almost all the books in my house fill the bookshelves from end to end, so don’t need bookends. While I have hundreds of books, I have only one or two sets of bookends.

I would hope well-read folks wouldn’t fall into the lazy trap of generational stereotypes. Oh, well. There are some in every crowd.

Actually, a recent study revealed that young people are reading WAY more than their older generations ever did. So perhaps you need to educate yourself on the subject before making comments like this.

Not true about every young person. My daughter reads.

Susan

My grandkids ( in their 20’s) are all big readers.

Hi Leslie I think she’s talking about booksends for books not a song.

Leslie

@Cleo, I know… but the word reminded me of this beautiful song. The guy in the shop could have checked whether he had the album! 😀

@Leslie lol!

My friend is a professor and gives a test every year. This year she said the students did the worst they have ever done. Most didn’t even know what a moat was. She had to explain to grown adults what a moat is. ? That’s just one example. The others were just as pathetic.

Perhaps not a very good school.

@Daynah ,right, imagine a professor talking about how uneducated her students are and not feeling some sort of responsibility ??‍♀️

Honestly, I read a lot of YA fantasy and haven’t noticed moats mentioned very often. In fact, I’m having trouble thinking of the last time I read a recently published fantasy that included a moat in the setting. Sometimes words and story elements that were popular fall to the wayside. Perhaps some of the other vocab terms on the test are like that.

Christina

It’s an easy, fun test for the end of the year. It’s a college, not high school. This was not an issue in previous years. She has given the same test for 15 years. It’s not for vocabulary or English. It truly is supposed to be a fun test using common, known words. I come across the same problem looking through antique listings. “Plug in hanging light.” “Small bench with attached table.” lol They have names! Education, laziness, I don’t know.

Oops I had the google what a moat is ? but English isn’t my first language so I have an excuse? ??

I don’t think our posts are really taking the mick out of someone. But that old words, old habits (related to books, to reading)… are lost, no longer remembered.
And if the other post pertained to a signpost about equal sex and religion, the person who posted has apologized and removed it.

Yes can’t talk about the other post… but I can say that both the salesperson and myself had a laugh about it, hence sharing! ??

When people don’t read, words become lost. At 38, I still feel young, but call myself old. I feel I have “old” habits. TV shows and movies replace too many words with swear words (and I cuss a lot). We are losing our language.

Bookends are readily found..
I have often given and collected.. improvising with delight from found objects when traveling..
my gaggle and acquaintances, from the very young to well into senior years, are well familiar with ‘bookends’..

Dani

Perhaps, you mumbled and she misheard you. It happens to old folks such as yourself. ??

As I said indeed, it made me feel old ??? I think generational gaps can be quite funny, just as I couldn’t belieeeveee my parents didn’t know the Top 40 by heart when I was young…

My husband works for the cable company. He was helping an elderly customer set up internet. He asked if she had a tablet or pad (so he could configure the settings.) She brought him a yellow legal pad and a pencil.

Not wrong at ALL.

Julissa

Just goes to show different generations have different ideas of what things mean. And no, she was not wrong. Lol

2
Leslie

That’s sad. And you are not old! My granddaughters have bookends in their bookcase at my home. It’s called educating the next generation!

Do not feel old because some ignorant person doesn’t know what it is! Young people are more and more ignorant that’s just a small example. Just because they live in the digital era doesn’t mean that they don’t need more knowledge. One thing that’s missing on younger minds is curiosity that I believe is paramount!

I just thought it was a very funny situation and I actually made fun of myself feeling old not of the younger person being stupid. Not sure how my post intends to put someone down?
