Cotton candy read, fluffy and fun but not much substance. I realize it’s the first of a series but Kwan did a poor job with the ending, imo.

I couldn’t get into it. I made it about ten pages and realized I just didn’t care about the society drama that was being set up to unfold.

@Emily I don’t mind society drama, it just has to be well written. Think Sense and Sensibility

Emily

@Emilie I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that I’ve never reas Sense and Sensibility. But I do think your right, the writing style makes all the difference sometimes!

@Emily just to give you a feel of Jane Austin, this is from Pride and Prejudice, which has a better first page …
“IT is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.

However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.”

I thought it was a great escapist novel that was decently written and taught me a little about a world and culture I knew nothing about. I like the occasional book about the rich and carefree.

Loved all three! A fun read – not impactful, thought provoking or deep, but just any easy and entertaining escape from all the drama of real life…

Hate the writing. Couldn’t get past the second chapter.

Thanks for all the comments guys, interesting to hear everyone’s thoughts. I just finished it. The story line wasn’t too bad but yeah, I didn’t think much of the writing. Very much from the tell don’t show school, and way too many descriptions of opulence, although I will give the benefit of the doubt and assume that was an intentional style choice, to highlight how much the characters thought of their own wealth!

Loved it and I thought the movie was even better. I’m reading the second and will read the third next.
