Who was the authors of those books? Id love to read them

0

@Sadie , Patricia Highsmith wrote “The Talented Mr Ripley” (of which there are several; “Talented” is the first); Emma Donoghue wrote “Room” …

0
SadieQuestion author

Thank you!!

1
Richard

@Sadie in fact, I believe Emma Donoghue also wrote the screenplay, which is why it’s so close to the movie.

1
SadieQuestion author

Thats always nice. 🙂

1

Re: Patricia Highsmith: she also wrote the book upon which “Carol” was based (it was actually published as “The Price of Salt”) … The movie “Carol” was excellent.

What is your fav book turned into a movie? Or just movie and book?

0

@Sadie there’s a lot: “Gone With the Wind”, “The Prince of Tides” (Pat Conroy), “The Great Santini” (Pat Conroy again), “Lord of the Rings” (of course) …

1

Wow. Yes of course Lord of the Rings. Have you read Eragon? If so… how bad did you think the movie was?

0

Haven’t either read the book or saw the movie ?

I liked The Martian movie better than the book. The book had a lot of science talk in it that bored me..felt like I was reading a science text.

The Geisha in Japan, the authentic Geisha, warn to not believe what is in that book; it was fabricated to sell outside of Japan; it is actually hated by the Japanese.

I completely agree, I did the same. I got 3/4 of the way through the book and had to give up. It really felt like a YA book, Four was portrayed as a sulky teen but in the movie he was deep and mysterious. Love the movies though.

1

I want to read Princess Bride- It’d be interesting to see if the movie is better. Who wrote The Shining? I’d like to read it.

0
Lisa

I’ve seen the movie. Then I read the book. It is the only movie I like better than the book. Much better in my opinion.

0
Lisa

The Shining is a CLASSIC written by Stephen King. Was one of the scariest things I ever read. The movie was AWFUL.

1
Kayleigh

I wouldn’t say the movie is better than the book. I was pleasantly surprised how well the movie came from the book. I loved them both (saw movie ages before I read book, my favorite movie.)

1
Cherri

I agree about the Shining. It was an AMAZING book and the movie is deplorable.

1
Alex

The Shining is a terrifying book, but it doesn’t translate well into film. Kubrick’s version was flawed. King’s own film version, while sticking close to the book, was even worse. Some books simply don’t fit the medium of film.

1

I usually don’t have a problem with it, I notice the differences and sometimes I get a bit sad if the movie doesn’t show something that happened in the book. There is ONE movie that did as well as the book, in my opinion, and that’s The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. In my opinion, they followed the book relatively well and the additions they made only enhanced the story without changing it or completely ruining it. That said, every other film has been garbage I refuse to acknowledge. Eragon was a train wreck, The Golden Compass was ridiculous, and Percy Jackson was like an entirely different story. *sigh*

Visually speaking (which is an oxymoron I know) The new IT movie that comes out in the fall looks rather promising. I mean Tim Curry was AMAZING as the ’90’s version of Pennywise but this new one actually looks more scary and not as campy (plus Bill Skarsgard admitted to making a kid cry when in full on costume/make up) so… I am actually cautiously optimistic there

I thought Life of Pi was a pretty good adaptation, though it takes out my favorite part of the entire book: throughout his childhood, Pi practices Hinduism, Catholicism, and Islam. This horrifies his parents, friends and teachers. His reasoning is simple: “I just want to love God.” He doesn’t care how many forms God comes in, he wants to experience and love them all. And they left that out, and to me it’s the most poignant part of the story. I’m not even religious, but his openness to all forms of belief touched me.
They allude to it, by showing him practicing the different religions, but I don’t remember them actually putting that line in…which was disappointing.

This page gives you a glimpse. He goes into depth about what he learns from each religion. I have a system of eclectic beliefs, because I too have studied a lot of religions, so I relate to Pi so much. This book is so beautiful and will always be one of my all time favorites.

Wonderful, i take parts of different religions that I believe are relevant and use the lessons in my every day life too

Then you will absolutely be absorbed by the messages in this book. I think it was a decent film adaptation, but overall it missed the biggest message, or rather barely skimmed it, to make room for the more fantastical bits. The book has it all though.

My ‘happy place’ is the local Buddhist Temple, beautiful, peaceful and full of love. But I love visiting other places of worship and I teach primary R.E. so try to incorporate as many school trips as I can

Kelsie

I love Buddhism, I think it’s the one I’ve studied most aside from Hinduism. Never been to a temple, though I would love to go one day.

Hazel

The one close to me, is a Kadampa Buddhist temple which I think is a slightly different branch from the traditional Tibetan Buddhism but to me, the message, at the core is the same – love, peace, acceptance and forgiveness

Sounds wonderful

The Book Thief was just as good as the book,I was floored. Excellent.

I really liked the BBC adaptation of Neverwhere. I think it was more of a mini series than a movie though.

Movies better than their book counterparts (and in some cases short-stories) in my opinion are Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, Total Recall, The Princess Bride, The Godfather, Life of Pi, Minority Report, and I’m sure there are many others that I can’t think of right now.

I didnt even know half of those were books! Mainly Forrest gump

I read incessantly, and I have since I was a child. I always attempt to read the book prior to watching the movie. The only time in my life, so far, (I am 63) that I feel the movie was actually better than the novel is in the case of “Forrest Gump” by Winston Groom. After watching Tom Hanks’ amazing film portrayal of Forrest the book completely pales in comparison, at least it did so for me.

The only better movie than the book I’ve watched is How To Train Your Dragon. Ok, so I did love both the books and the two movies and shows, but I’m more of a fan of the movie.
And the worst screenplay/film to me is The Host. Loved the book, but couldn’t get through the film

True lol

I liked both the book and the movie of How to Train Your Dragon, but it did bug me that they were basically TWO DIFFERENT STORIES. Why even give the movie the same name?

1
Mariyah

Because that’s what the movie is based off of? Lol. Even Cressida herself really enjoyed it, despite how different it is from the books.

Cujo biggest disappointment for me ever.

A truly great novel–and what’s great is that the movie versions are usually good to great as well.

Worst: Absolute Power starring Gene Hackman & Clint Eastwood from 1997. I don’t care how good of an actor people think Eastwood is, he CANNOT be a diminutive, 70-year-old black man. That is the description of Luther in the book.

Speaking of Clint Eastwood, I was extremely disappointed with the casting of him and Meryl Streep in Bridges of Madison County. ?

Gail

I’m not an Eastwood fan so I don’t usually watch his movies; but I liked Absolute Power as a book and thought I’d give it a try. If it were remade now with someone like Samuel Jackson or Morgan Freeman playing Luther, it might work (although they are too tall). I can forgive slight liberties in casting but total disregard for the books character is unforgivable.

1
Rebecca

Would Don Cheadle work? He’s talented and not very tall. I will have to check out the book.

0
Gail

Yes. I was trying to think of older black men (with talent) to play the role. Don Cheadle would be a bit too young but with some prosthetic makeup he could pull it off…he’s shorter than Freeman & Jackson but just as talented to do the role.

Reads the book “The help” absolutely stunning, the film was very mediocre in comparison.

I’m reading Cabal by Clive Barker right now which is what Nightbreed is based on. Love the movie and the book is really good so far.

The best I can recall is The Godfather. The worst is 1995’s The Scarlet Letter.

Do NOT watch The Book Thief BEFORE you read the book. I HATED the movie. Completely missed the mark and took all of the beautiful magic out of the story. Must read the book and ignore the movie IMO

I can think of a few movies that were better than the book. The Man Who Fell to Earth (though Walter Tevis novel is quite good!), The Man in the Glass Booth (even though the author took his name off the film).

The movie for Beautiful Creatures was awful….and so was the movie for Janet Evanovich’s One for the Money.

“The Princess Bride” was infinitely better as a film than as a book. Goldman’s original story just didn’t have the same pizzazz.

The Lovely Bones was close, still enjoyed the book better. I thought the Girl On The Train was way better as a book and confusing as a movie.

In a way, it’s unfair to compare the two art-forms; they both should stand on their own, two separate works of art. By necessity, a movie will (almost) always be a truncated version of a book, which will tend to irritate lovers of the book. To me, it’s “apples and oranges” …

Donna Fraser Bailey , the author IS contributing, by the very fact that his novel is being adapted.

I can’t name a movie that is better than it’s book. However, I know of one that copied, nearly word for word the book in it’s miniseries: “Lonesome Dove”. I have no comments for successive books. Just the first one.

I watched Forrest Gump the movie. Loved it. The book I thought was going to be as good or better. It was awful. The book just went into a weird way in the life of Forrest.

The movie This is Where I Leave You was just as good as the book. They stayed very close to the story.
