HBO mini series was very good. Same producer (or director?) as HBO’s Big Little Lies which was excellent – and was one of the few times where I thought the screen version was better than the book. I wonder if that will be the case with Sharp Objects.
Gillian Flynn the author was also Executive Producer of the series. She ensured it started as close to the book as possible given filming constraints. While I thought the series was pretty good, the book was a little better.
I read it. It definitely has that feeling of creepiness like Gone Girl. There is self harm in the story that really bothered me. But I liked it anyway. The TV interpretation is very good.
I am reading it now before I tackle the mini-series. It would violate my personal policy on watching the movie or television series before reading the book?
@Naomi I loved the one by Jodi picoult dealing with eugenics. Recommended it. Then subsequent books seemed she was just a hack genre writer. Decent sentences but.
Are you talking about happy ending or ending with a red ribbon? That is exactly what I love about her books (although this one only got 3 stars) I don’t see that in her writing. It isn’t about that red ribbon…it is the ugliness of life.
I guess I like dark!! I violated my never a movie before a book rule. The series was fabulous, but really looking forward to the book. The book is almost always better!!??
Meh. A bit over the top. And she has thing for throwing in a bit of animal torture here and there just for kicks. I’ve read them all, but can’t say that liked any of them and Sharp Objects the least.
Almost bought it yesterday. Watched the series. I’d stay at the motel before living with her mother! Had one just as bad. If you can’t please them, and they TELL you they never loved you…leave and forget them. Works wonders for your own peace of mind.
For some inexplicable reason, Gone Girl hit me so wrongly, I wouldn’t begin to read another Gillian Flynn. Am I being ever so stubborn? Yes. But I never felt so manipulated in my life as I did with that book. ?
I have to agree. I did enjoy most of the book though-although not the characters-but felt the last quarter of the book was rushed and that she just decided it was time to end the book. Period.
Yes! Flynn is my favorite author, and I’m a respectable English teacher ? Her writing is amazing, and although, her characters rarely, if at all, have redeeming qualities, I think it’s what makes her stick out from the crowd. Can you tell I’m protective of her? Lol I recommend all of her works for anyone who likes psychological thrillers – great messages of mental health awareness, emotional abuse, and how relationships can deteriorate.
Yes
Yes
Very good. My favorite of Gillian Flynn’s
Yes, if you are a fan of Gillian Flynn. She is not for everyone.
Gone Girl is better but it’s a decent read. I liked the mini-series as well.
I agree that Gone Girl is better.
It’s good. I could not put it down. However, I am still a little disturbed…six months later.
Yes
Yes!
If you like them dark and Gothic, yes it’s a very good read.
HBO mini series was very good. Same producer (or director?) as HBO’s Big Little Lies which was excellent – and was one of the few times where I thought the screen version was better than the book. I wonder if that will be the case with Sharp Objects.
I read both and watched both. Thought they were both excellent, but Sharp Objects did a better job sticking to the book.
Too dark for me!
I am reading it now before I tackle the mini-series. It would violate my personal policy on watching the movie or television series before reading the book?
Love the HBO series
I loved Gone Girl, but Sharp Objects (and Dark Places) were too dark, raw and disturbing for my taste.
All of Gillian Flynn’s books are good. A bit disturbing but really good!
Oh yes!
I read Gone Girl and Sharp Objects. It’s a no from me on both.
Yes!!!!
She also wrote Dark Places! Another great book!
No. She’s a terrible writer. One of the most overrated writers in the history of overrated writers.
Curious – what makes you say this? Interested in understanding your perspective.
I’m curious too as to what makes her a “terrible writer”?
I think her writing is very good. Was completely taken by gone girl!
No…that award goes to Jodi Piccoult and James Patterson.
@Naomi I loved the one by Jodi picoult dealing with eugenics. Recommended it. Then subsequent books seemed she was just a hack genre writer. Decent sentences but.
I think the same thing happened with James Patterson. There comes a point where they become too commercial.
Gone Girl was one of my least favorite books of all time. I only got through it because I was trying to figure out when the good part would happen.
Are you talking about happy ending or ending with a red ribbon? That is exactly what I love about her books (although this one only got 3 stars) I don’t see that in her writing. It isn’t about that red ribbon…it is the ugliness of life.
I simply don’t think she is a good writer.
Oh My Yes!
I guess I like dark!! I violated my never a movie before a book rule. The series was fabulous, but really looking forward to the book. The book is almost always better!!??
Dark Places and Sharp Objects are both dark examinations of life – but well written and the main character in each was well worth getting to know.
I thought it was better than Gone Girl. I found the story rather disturbing; stayed with me for a few days. Worth reading.
Yes! Dark Places is even better.
Great Book!
Yes!
I loved Gone Girl but didn’t like Sharp Objects at all. GG was very suspenseful. SO was just a collection of horrible things strung together.
Phenomenal
Yes!
Yes, yes, yes!

Very good! Much better than the series that just aired.
Very yes! The writing is so grimy and gritty and so, so evocative. My favorite Flynn book.

Yes
OK
I thought so.
Great book! Just finished the mini series!
Not really A little too creepy for me
This is not a new book, is it?
No it is not a new book
Remember it fro. ph.d. days. Oretty sure that was, the, title. Thank you for help.
Dark!!
I just watched the small screen adaptation and it was very good. Now I’ll need to read the book.
Loved it
The word I use is grim. It is well written. Does that mean it’s good? If you liked the series, the book will not be a disappointment.
Glad to know this, thank you.
Yes very creepy
I stopped in the middle. It was dark and disturbing with not a single relatable character.
It’s well written and has a great twist. I really enjoyed it. If you are a reader who needs likable characters, it may be hard to get through.
I thought it was very predictable, same as her other book, Dark Places.
Some love it….some Hate it I think it just depends on the person reading…I don’t care for any of her books or movies…
Agree with this. Just don’t like them.
Ok but wouldn’t read it again
Watched series on HBO. Enjoyed it but is dark. Did also read the book!
Which first? I always read book first, but not this time.
@Gaynor I read the book first.
I read all of Gillian Flynn’s books a few years ago. Gone Girl and Dark Places were good too.
Just like the series on HBO I found it excruciating and depressing.
I loved it.
I didn’t like it at all. I also didn’t like GG. It turned me off reading any more of her books.
I liked it but it was a little too creepy for me.
Liked it. Dark.
I loved it.
I liked it, but it is very dark.
It is pretty good but the mother-daughter dynamic is creepy! Like VC Andrews creepy.
Great show on HBO. So I’m thinking the book must be great.
I know books don’t have to have a happy ending, I just found this book to be so dark and bleak. Not my thing
Just finishing it now very fast read, very interesting
It’s my favorite of her books!
Really dark. I liked the series more than the book.
Yes!
Read it!
Yes, but a little freaky. That one sat with me for quite awhile after I read it.
Gone girl was better.
Loved Gone Girl!
Her books are too dark for me.
Yes
Great show!
Meh. A bit over the top. And she has thing for throwing in a bit of animal torture here and there just for kicks. I’ve read them all, but can’t say that liked any of them and Sharp Objects the least.
The TV series was amazing!
Recently finished the book – liked it, but very dark.
I liked Gone Girl much better. Sharp Objects was too disturbing.
Agree?
Yep — agree totally. I preferred the writing and story of Gone Girl, though I despised the ending. Sharp Objects was too brutal; I couldn’t finish it.
Yes
It’s brutal..
My fave of Flynn’s.
Almost bought it yesterday. Watched the series. I’d stay at the motel before living with her mother! Had one just as bad. If you can’t please them, and they TELL you they never loved you…leave and forget them. Works wonders for your own peace of mind.
FABULOUS!!!!!
Loved it
Yes
Dark and twisty but great read!
No…
Yes
Good, but disturbing…
What Robbie said.
Strange.
Yes
Fun but an extreme stretch in believability, kind of border state Southern Gothic suspense.
I liked it
Yes
Yep
Yes
Definitely twisted…but I liked it. I read it after the firs episode of Sharp Objects on TV. It helped me follow the series
I like rthe author’s style but not the story – too many cutters in my classes.
No. It had the same problem as Gone Girl. The author has no idea how to finish her books.
Yes
I tried to watch show stopped watching it
My sister said it was odd. After watching the series, the last two episodes were like a completely different TV show than the first six episodes.
I don’t think i’ll bother.
I enjoyed it. Super quick read.

This is why I love this Book Club‼️‼️ We all have different opinions and tastes in our reading; and can express them freely‼️‼️
I enjoyed it
My favorite Gillian Flynn
I liked it! Love her books!
I liked it a lot!!
I really liked it!
If you liked Gone Girl. I didn’t.
I liked them both—until the ends. Thought both just fizzled out at the end. Plus, it was hard to like any character she has written.
I really enjoyed it. Not my usual read but it was a good one. Glad I read it.
I love the HBO series … never read the book. I LOVE AMY ADAMS..
Yes
I enjoyed it.
I am planning on reading it also

I agree! She’s a great writer even though her stories are a bit messed up! Lol!
Very dark but a great read!
I loved it
Yes! All of Gillian Flynn’s books are great!
Read one of her books but she’ too dark. I like deep but not unrelenting cruelty
Read it last month then watched the show and liked both. Book of course gave more details
Dunno. But don’t run with it! ?
It was good!
Her best!!
I enjoyed it though I had some minor quibbles. Wasn’t ahead of it as many people were. Can’t get into the HBO series.
Not the best by her
Yes.
Yea
Enjoyed the book.
