Some people were just crazy for it (as evidenced in this post), but I read it and thought it was just “meh.” I finished it and didn’t hate it but I also thought parts were too cheesy or flowery. I think of a latte that has too much sugar: idea is great, execution might be too much for some and perfect for others.
@Zee I agree, which is why I think “chick-lit” is so popular. I’m not insulting anyone’s taste: our differences are what make us interesting. But the fluff and saccharine sweetness is not for me.
Everyone likes different styles at different times in their life, I think. Sometimes I’m up for Dickens or Proust, etc., other times I just want a good murder mystery. I’m a retired teacher — I’m just happy when I know that people are reading something that appeals to them.
I adore the sound of his voice and was so happy when I realized who was reading the book. I identify voices very easily and recalled his voice from Disney movies in my childhood.
True, most stories do have love, but when the central plot revolves around the relationship of the main characters it’s a love story. If the relationship were a subplot or the book focused more on other aspects of the MC’s life it wouldn’t be a love story, just a story that has love.
as far as I’m concerned, the love story in this one was just one of the plot threads — aside from the magical aspects, the book seemed, to me, to be about relationships of all kinds, not just romantic love
@Kathy I know what you mean! Sometimes I can’t get into a book, set it aside for a long while, and when I try it again, I really enjoy it. Other times, not so much 😉
I love this book. I have also listened to the Audible version with Jim Dale reading. I always increase the speed of my audiobooks though, because I feel the readers’ voices are too slow.
If you liked the Night Circus, Caraval is a whole different league. It’s beautifully written, well developed, just gorgeous. And the plot is more concise with less hanging threads.
I pushed through it because I was reading it as one of my book club books. I forced myself to read a few chapters a day then I could read what I wanted. I feel the same about the book club book I am reading now.
Yes. The writing is a bit dense. I did the book on audio and had to go back and restart (based on the recommendation of a friend). It was worth a second try. Extremely imaginative.
BIG NAY. Book is boring af. Nothing happened in the book. Ending was the stupidest I’ve ever read in a book. It started out good but that’s about it. Freaking slow read. I dont even know how I managed to finish it. Maybe I was hoping for the better but it never happened.
I don’t know but it’s on my tbr list!
Yay, yay, yay, yay!!!!
Yay to an infinite power
Loved every single page. Am anxiously waiting for her to write another book.
Comes out may 29
Thx. will check this out while waiting for Erin Morgenstern to publish a new one.
@Desiree can’t wait. LOVED Caraval!
I have it but haven’t read it yet lol I’m hoping to read this weekend
@Desiree do it. It’s amazing.

Don’t you think people seem to love flowery and cheesy writing these days? Maybe that’s why so many people seem to love it.
@Zee I agree, which is why I think “chick-lit” is so popular. I’m not insulting anyone’s taste: our differences are what make us interesting. But the fluff and saccharine sweetness is not for me.
Yes, definitely don’t mean that people who love this book have bad tastes. But most people, generally speaking, seem to love flowery writing.
I’m very picky and hate most of the “popular “books. I m educated as well and 50 yo. I don’t like poor writing or characters. I loved Night Circus.

Whatever you do, don’t listen to the audio book. The story was ok but the narrator was so annoying. I had to stop halfway through.
Did you try speeding it up? Jim Dale has a lovely voice.
Yes, I think it was a combination of his accent and when he tried to do the voice of the little girl. It was like nails on a chalkboard for me.
I adore the sound of his voice and was so happy when I realized who was reading the book. I identify voices very easily and recalled his voice from Disney movies in my childhood.
@Ang Jim Dale is one of my favorite narrators. He did all the Harry Potter books and he was outstanding.
Dare I say… I never got into HP but I wonder if listening might do it for me.
We listened to them all (HP) while taking family trips. Loved them.
Yay!
Yay, liked alot
I’m kind of confused about the Genre, is it fantasy? horror?
Definitely falls more into the fantasy/love story category.
thx Jessica!
Not my thing then. Fantasy, yes. Love story, nah. :p
same here Zoe, not so sure now
It’s fantasy, magic. Most stories have love
I saw it as magical realism

I think fantasy is where it belongs.
I would call this magical realism. I’m a fantasy fiend and couldn’t get into it.
@Zee from what i read cause i never finished the book it wasnt much of a love story
YAY!
I couldn’t even finish it
I started it couldn’t get into it. I have wanted to try again but found so many other great books I’ve not got round to it yet!
Please tell me about some of the other great books. Desperately in need of book recommendations.
as far as I’m concerned, the love story in this one was just one of the plot threads — aside from the magical aspects, the book seemed, to me, to be about relationships of all kinds, not just romantic love
@Wendy like I said I couldn’t get in to it, it’s on my list to try again and maybe I will some day. I’m just enjoying my TBR list too much!
@Kathy I know what you mean! Sometimes I can’t get into a book, set it aside for a long while, and when I try it again, I really enjoy it. Other times, not so much 😉

Not my cup of tea but you may enjoy it.
I love this book. I have also listened to the Audible version with Jim Dale reading. I always increase the speed of my audiobooks though, because I feel the readers’ voices are too slow.
Caraval was 1000 times better than Night Circus, in my opinion. Loved every minute, hard to put down, can’t wait for sequel.
I saw a review yesterday that made me think I might like this because of the fact that I loved TNC.
If you liked the Night Circus, Caraval is a whole different league. It’s beautifully written, well developed, just gorgeous. And the plot is more concise with less hanging threads.
Yes!!!!
Nope nope nope. I didnt like it, couldnt get into it with the way it was written

I did not like it. For me it was 500 pages of boring. Everyone likes different things so you may love it.
How did you finish it? I just got so bored of it i couldnt finish it
I pushed through it because I was reading it as one of my book club books. I forced myself to read a few chapters a day then I could read what I wanted. I feel the same about the book club book I am reading now.
