I’ll Give you the Sun by Jandy Nelson is a wonderful YA read and Carry On by Rainbow Rowell is a super fun Harry Potter-like read with an LGBT subplot.
Carry on – rainbow Rowell The miseducation of Cameron Post – can’t remember author Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe – Benjamin can’t remember last name
Simon versus the homosapiens agenda -Becky Albertal
@Donnie The Book definitely deals with some heavy issues, but the ending isn’t depressing. You should definitely read it and then watch the movie, which is also really good! ?
Early Love & Rockets is a maybe. It’s mature themes sometimes but handled well…I wouldn’t go on my opinion alone, but it reminds me of things I read that I wasn’t “grown up” enough for but still enjoyed, and enjoyed more when I came back as an adult. If that makes any sense.
I think most of Adam Silvera’s YA novels feature LGBTQ characters. The Five Stages of Andrew Brawley by Shaun David Hutchinson is very good. Julie Peters is another LGBTQ friendly YA author.
Well in celebration of Roger Staggs, I think I will read every suggestion on this list. I also lead an LGBTQ advocacy group at a middle school, and we’ve already added many of these titles to our library this year. Pretty sure the love and guidance teens receive from immersing themselves in literature that they can relate to will do immeasurable good in comparison to the small minds of the world like our dear friend mentioned above. Perhaps if he read to learn and empathize with others rather than to affirm his own world view, he wouldn’t be such a miserable curmudgeon. But that must just be the “liberal” musings of a book reader, right? ?
Oh! And today I just finished. The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater. This one is a true story about an agender teen who was set on fire on a bus in Oakland in 2013 because he(they is the preferred pronoun) was wearing a skirt. The kid who set him on fire was black, so the book goes into both sides of the issue. LGBTQ acceptance and the discrimination of black people in the criminal justice system. It was an excellent book and written for teens.
