White Fang.

Firebringer if you enjoy fantasy, and The Wolves of Time: Journey to the Heartland.

War Horse.

Black Beauty, more for kids, but still a good read.

In the Heart of the Sea, nonfiction, but reads like fiction. Was the inspiration for Moby Dick

James Herriott wrote books about his experiences as a vet which are really good. He was a vet in the UK. They’re older books, but they are worth the read if you haven’t read them yet.

Bobby, by Elizabeth Pienaar is a beautiful story, based somewhat in truth, and told from a dog’s perspective. Not quite in the same category as Animal Farm and Watership down, but definitely worth the read!

Duncton wood series by Horwood is like Watership with moles – or joyce stranger wrote loads of realistic heart rending animal books.

“The Art of Racing in the Rain”, by Garth Stein. A book told from a dog’s POV. He’s not a typical dog though. He wants to be a human and is very smart. Caution: It may make you cry.
“The Bees” Laline Paull. It’s a book told from a bee’s POV. I really enjoyed the research that went into this one. It’s fiction, but there is so much about bees that I didn’t know!
