Sheesh, I hadn’t realized how much true crime I’ve read. I’ve read all the suggestions but in Cold Blood by Capote is the standard.

I don’t read series either but I am reading The Lion the witch and the wardrobe for my animal book and will read Prince Caspian for the series one. Unless an author I really like gets her second in a series of which I have read the first, out in time

The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith. it is the first in a series, there’s about a dozen of them so far, and they are quite charming.
