Its not an easy read, dont give up too early, the narrator is a wee boy and it takes time to relax into the style of the language. Once you are over that hurdle it is a wonderful book, fast paced and intriguing and very sad
I couldn’t get into it really. But then her earlier book Slammerkin is one of my favourites and I think I was judging it on that – two completely different scenarios.
if you can get over the child’s voice which nearly made me give up on the book it is a good read. Personally i found the ending a bit trite but overall worthwhile.
Really enjoyed they way the author used capital letters for the items in the Room, all the really important things of their lives. The second half less so, actually thought the film better for the second half!
I couldn’t get into it, but it may’ve been me. Sometimes a book is good or bad to the reader based upon where she is in her life when reading. I may give it another try.
Like some others here, I didn’t like the child narrator’s voice, it didn’t ring true to me. For that reason, I didn’t enjoy the book. The storyline is original and it’s readable. But I can’t exactly recommend it for everyone. That said, most people like this book. I read Frog Music by the same author and didn’t like it at all.
If you are an immersive reader you’ll love it. The child names things by their name…i.e. the room is called Room,i found the child’s lack of imagination striking and sad, couldn’t even think of names because they hadn’t read books, been around people, definitely made me feel sad and fortunate. Enjoy your book. Xx
It’s excellent. Hard to read, especially if you have young children, though.
I loved this book! Read it with my book club and we had a great discussion. It’s not an easy read though just because of the subject matter.
Amazing must read
I read it a long time ago but I really liked it. The concept of the story is disturbing but the way it’s written is wonderful
It’s very painful to read but ultimately beautiful
So disturbing but a very good book.
Loved this book!!!!!!!
Looooooooved it
Disturbing!
Hard to get passed his communication skills ? but once I got used to it I enjoyed the book – disturbing
I couldn’t get into it… I found the writing style really hard to wrap my head around
Thought I was the only person in the world that couldn’t get into this one….Never given up before without trying again but did with this one.
i gave up on it too
This book stays with me, even though it’s been months since I read it. Excellent read.
very sad story.. but very well written. i loved that is was through the mind of the little boy. the movie was good as well.
It was a beautiful telling of coming to terms with a terrible situation…. I love loved this book and am searching for another of her books
I liked it
The book is being told by a 5 year old. Great booK!
I couldn’t get into it. I think it was because of the child talking and the terms that he used kept it from flowing for me
Watched the movie yesterday. Awesome movie. (I didn’t know it was a book.)
I read it in one sitting couldn’t put it down
Loved it and the movie!
I loved this book.
I couldn’t get passed the first few chapters. The way the child talked bugged me. I have heard it’s good. Maybe one day I will pick it up again.
Me too. I gave up and thought I was the only one who had. No way would I ever watch the movie either.
@Lori I tried but couldn’t do it. I haven’t watched the movie, either.
Enjoy the suspense in the beginning!
Couldn’t stand it.
Amen! Amen! Amen!

Such a good book. enjoy it
Didn’t like it
I loved it so much! It seems a bit .. odd .. to start, with how the boy speaks, but that comes to make sense and it’s a great book
It’s a good book
Gave up quickly on this one
Me too and didn’t waste time on the movie either.
I wished there was an epilogue to give a bit more of an ending but otherwise good book
I didnt enjoy it at all but did read the whole book.
Brilliant!
I couldn’t get into it really. But then her earlier book Slammerkin is one of my favourites and I think I was judging it on that – two completely different scenarios.
I loved it but it can take a few pages to get use to the young boys dialect.
Fantastic
Great read! It may take a few pages to get into the idea if their little world and their language.

I loved it. Loved the perspective
Loved.

I really tried to like this book but it just wasn’t for me.
The ‘child speak’ is bloody annoying
Awful book. I know the child is obviously behind with speech etc but it was terrible to read.
Be prepared to cry.
Loved it.
Loved it too
I thought it was excellent and very thought provoking.
Great book
Loved! Couldn’t put it down!
Riveting book and movie, both kind of hard to take at times.

Loved it.
Loved the book. Movie was good-book was better.
Kid speak got really annoying.
Heart felt

Read it. Strange.

another marmite book. I thought it was very well done xxx
Stick with it till you’re used to the child’s POV
I don’t usually like a book from a child’s perspective. But this was an exception. Haunting story line. Great read.
Great book, stick with it, it’s worth it x
❤️❤️
Make sure you arrange for your children to stay at a relatives before reading so you don’t hug them so hard you cause injury!
Loved the first half, but hated the second half. I was more interested in the mother’s story then the child’s, but once the POV changes….ugggg….
