It is a well-written and gripping story, but be aware that it was written from a white slave owner’s point of view. Full of kindly white owners and slaves who don’t even want to be free. It totally overlooks the evils of slavery. And the black characters are very one dimensional.

It’s good–a great plot–and very interesting in how slavery was viewed even as late as the 1930’s and 40’s all over the U.S. Today, I read it and kind of shudder in parts, but I think it’s important to realize how preconceptions can change.

It’s a great example of Historical fiction. Where we were, how we have changed, and how far we still need to go.
I took this out of the bookcase when I was about 11 and put The Children’s Arabian Nights, which was the same size, and cover in its place. I loved it then and loved rereading it as I grew older – and old.

One of the first books I ever read! Loved it!
I found war accounts in the middle of the book a bit laborious, but overall I would always recommend it.
