The reason why, I like this book ,is because of the relationships between the children and the mystery of Arthur Radley. It was also ground breaking because of the trial of Tom Robinson and his defence by Atticus Finch, but the story itself, is focussed on the children.

I read it a few times and I liked it. The movie is great too. Gregory Peck won Best Actor in 1962 for his portrayal of Atticus Finch.

Such a good book. Not very long but with depth. I’m so glad she revised this book and we didn’t have to read Go Set a Watchman which was the original version of To Kill a Mockingbird.

@Mary mean what? I just went and bought the book…is it different from before? Well I read it in german – maybe the translation is the same as before?!

Josephine, the book “Go Set a Watchman” that was printed in 2015 is actually the original version of To Kill a Mockingbird. I’m glad that her editor at the time refused to publish but saw value in the bones of the story and gave Lee a chance to revise.

I will edit my post, I can see why it would be confusing. Thank you.

Really?

0
Mary

@Erin Really what? Not sure what you mean.

0
Erin

I mean the sequel was the original version of the first one?

0
Mary

Yes, Go Set a Watchman was actually the original version that Harper Lee said she did not want to have published. But when she got a new lawyer after her sister died the lawyer “found this long-lost manuscript” and had it published.

1
Eamon

Every day’s a school day. I never knew that. What is ‘Watchman like?

2
Mary

It’s about Scout as an adult. Atticus is a racist. The book is not nearly as moving as To Kill a Mockingbird less “heart” than TKM. Some said it was really Lee’s editor at the time who made To Kill a Mockingbird what it became. I wasn’t going to read Go Set a Watchman because I believe the lawyer got Lee’s permission in a sneaky, dishonest way and now profits from the book. But I borrowed it so I could talk more intelligently about it though.

2
Eamon

Lawyer…dishonest….profits…..? Neither will I be buying it in that case. Maybe catch it in a charity shop. Thanks for the synopsis Mary Johnson.

I think you mean, “To Kill a Mockingbird” not “How to kill a mockingbird”… no one else noticed this… It was an excellent book.

Just didn’t want anyone searching the wrong book title if they were interested.

I enjoyed it very much! I read it my sophomore year in high school. In addition to reading it in school, we also saw the film version with Gregory Peck.

I think I would have liked it more if I hadn’t been forced to read it in high school. That always spoils the joy of a good book.

Go Set a Watchman isn’t a sequel, it’s the original version before To Kill a Mockingbird was edited.

2
Maureen

I did not like it in school at all. So this past summer I gave it another go. I just did not like the book! Once or twice.

Amazing book! I’m reading “Go Set a Watchman,” which is the sequel to this book. I recommend that one too

Mary

It’s actually not the sequel. It’s the original manuscript that Harper Lee tried to publish but was rejected. The editor how read though saw possibility and worked with Lee to come up with To Kill a Mockingbird.

2
Emilee

I didn’t know that. But that’s cool to know ?

1
Mary

Harper Lee never wanted To Set a Watchman to be published but after her sister died the new lawyer “found” the manuscript, fired her editor and published the book.
