Omgoodness don’t quit. It gets better. I will say that I felt there were parts of the books that were a bit dry for me but I overall enjoyed the series.
I was recommended the series because of my obsession with Scotland and scottish history and from that perspective it’s rather… disappointing. But it’s a good series, I’m on book 2 at the moment.
My bookmark has been sitting at page 172 for over a year now. No desire to go back to it as I feel I wasted too much time getting to that point. I hope you end up enjoying it more than I did!
Yes!! It definitely gets better! I was completely captivated by it from page one but that obviously doesn’t happen with everyone. It’s an incredible story though, I’d definitely stick with it if I were you ♥️
@Erin I agree, the 1st chapter is a brilliant example of scene setting and character building. It gives nothing away about the book will eventually become. It’s one of the best 1st chapters of any book I’ve read
@Bronagh I agree completely!! This may sound ridiculous but I felt this instant and incredible connection with the book, just from the first couple of pages. It’s hard to describe! I just… fell in love ??♀️?
The history is solid. A legendary love story that is way beyond the typical “romance crap” that I disdain. But you have to embrace the time travel concept and this isn’t well-developed/described. Visit Outlander’s web page. The amount of detail that has gone into costuming, historical accuracy, and the storyline that covers the Jacobite Rebellion, Paris, and the American colonies is impressive. And, I taught history so I don’t impress easily, especially with the true-love stuff. Yet, love and romance are indeed part of life so I can deal with this portrayal.
I found that it started off slow, but I absolutely love the series. The books are long, detailed, and sometimes a heavy read but I’m just starting book 6 and I’m still not over the story. I’d give the first book a good chance before you give it up!
You need to realize that this series of books is more literary fiction then the fast paced plot of genre fiction. It’s a wonderful series if you give it a chance.
I read the first five five books. And never finished the rest. To be fair when she was writing them it was 3-5 years between books. So I lost interest. But now you have the advantage to read them one after another. I loved the story. She does go into too much detail at times. I met her once and she was really into research.
I read the book, but did not move on to the rest of the series. I can def see the appeal, but it wasn’t for me. So if it’s not for you, know your not alone, lol!
I read the first, thought it was ‘meh’ and didn’t read anymore… actually I don’t think I finished it. I couldn’t finish an episode either. Just not my cup of tea.
Too much violence, rape & sex for me. Especially on TV, the sex scenes just go on & on. Way too embarrassing if someone walks through the living room – I had to stop!
I read the first book, and while it does get interesting when Jaime is introduced, I was insanely disappointed that it became more like a bodice-ripper romance, which I would never pick up. If you don’t care for that genre, I’d stop reading. :p
It becomes far less of a “bodice ripper” as the series goes on. I think the author just wanted to convey a new relationship, hence the first book as a lot more sex in it. It becomes a very indepth, highly accurate, historical series over time, with some very interesting characters. I read the first book almost 25 years ago and, to this day, it’s the ONLY historical series that I’ve ever enjoyed.
I don’t know how far along you are but, it does start off slow. It got better for me.
My mom has always told me “You have to get to page 54! You have to meet Jaime before you quit!”

Sooooo good! ?
I love it.

It’s amazing

NO IT DOESNT. And I actually finished it. I was so mad because it never got better and I didn’t read the 2nd book
It doesn’t. Couldn’t force myself to read any more after book one
I haven’t been able to get into it. Read the first book but tried twice to read second and couldn’t.

@Erin me too I reread the first book several times
Series on tv was more for me. Had a heck of a time with books. Over the guilt now. ?
I’m one of the few people who didn’t like it. It was too loooooooooong.
No.
I loved it back in the 90’s but my tastes have changed and not so much second time around.
Loooooove the whole series!!! ???
It gets better! I can’t wait to continue the series!!!
Although I liked it and it was very well done, I was disappointed to realize it was a bodice ripper.
I could not get into it at all after a couple of attempts.
wish I could, but it never did for me 🙁
My mom couldnt put it down says it gets a lot better
I think if you don’t like it, you won’t like it. I enjoyed the first 4 books loads. But the 5th book needed an editor.

Never could get into these books
Thanks yall I will stick with it for a bit more to see if it gets better.
I hope it’s good, I’m reading it next month, it’s on my March TBR. ?
Couldn’t get into it…
I’ve tried three times to read it and couldn’t. That book and I have parted ways. ?

I loved these books from the first page ?♀️ but not everyone feels the same.
I love love love that series! There is a lot of history in her books, but the real hook is Jamie. The depth of his character is just amazing!

Nope Give up
It’s okay.
I am so glad there are others who didnt like it
We just all have different tastes. That’s all.
Yeeeeeeeeeesssss
I read the book, but did not move on to the rest of the series. I can def see the appeal, but it wasn’t for me. So if it’s not for you, know your not alone, lol!
The struggle is real
I fell in love from the beginning? Such beautiful writing. The pace is slow through out, so if that’s not your preference then don’t continue.
I’m slowly reading it too. Now at 66%.
I really disliked this series
The books are fab-it took me a little time to get into them but it was so worth it. The tv series was dire ?
Hated it. Thought it was badly written, cliched, history was superficial and it was too rapey
I read the first, thought it was ‘meh’ and didn’t read anymore… actually I don’t think I finished it. I couldn’t finish an episode either. Just not my cup of tea.
I got through maybe a third to a half of book 1 and let myself quit. I was just gradually more infuriated with the rape and abuse.
Too much violence, rape & sex for me. Especially on TV, the sex scenes just go on & on. Way too embarrassing if someone walks through the living room – I had to stop!
I tried so hard to get in to it! I got more than halfway through and couldn’t finish.
Same here and one of my best friends reads the whole series over and over.
@Charlotte I always hear how the show and the books were so good. It killed me not to finish it but I couldn’t. ?
For me, once I got past the first 100 pages or so of the first book, I loved it!!! I have not watched the tv series.

Wasn’t a fan of the books (read the first one, got 100 pgs into the second and decided to quit torturing myself) or the show.
